? re: area near Louis Armstrong Park

Hello. We (8 friends) will be visiting NO for the first time during the French Quarter festival for 5 days and have lookied into booking the Jazz Quarters B&B (they have a cottage with a kitchen that could fit us) . the location says it overlooks this park and looking at google maps, I noticed it is just beyond Rampart St. online readings have stated the area above Rampart is a bit dicey . ??? How bad is it? ..is it an area safe to walk to the french quarter during the day but just to cab to at night? If you have any other recommendations for places that could fit 8 people, it would be great. alternatively, we might just decide to rent a couple of rooms in the FQ
Thanks so much!

I wouldn't stay there. In fact, I don't even like to walk ON Rampart, much less beyond it. You need to be IN the French Quarter, which is one of the most highly-policed areas in the country.

Thank you Susan. Will do!

romsy - try La Maison Marigny or Quarter House. The first is a B&B and the second is a timeshare in the heart of the FQ. I've spoken to the owner of La Maison Marigny on the phone and he was absolutely helpful (with an issue non-related to his business). I can't say enough good things about him.

We stayed at the Quarter House years ago. It's in the FQ in a great location, but you'd want to nail down exactly what you're getting as far as accommodations go. We had a fabulous room, but others didn't look so good.

I have a new computer and it doesn't seem to allow me to post multiple links, but the first is lamaisonmarigny.com and I think the other one is just quarterhouse.com or something like that

That looks like the edge of Treme, which is up and coming, but I might not feel that comfortable walking there at night.

When we go with a group, we get rooms at the Provincial. Reasonable prices, great location, and lots of little courtyard nooks and crannies where a group can hang out at tables and chairs.

If money is no object, I have always coveted this penthouse atop the Jax Brewery with its own pool and stunning views: http://www.vrbo.com/241312

NOLA has over 150 hotels and numerous fine B&B's. I visit NOLA often and stay at the Ritx Carlton. I walk 4 miles every day and I walk in NOLA starting at the RC and going N to Rampart and then to Esplanade and back to the FQ. I would not stay in that area if it was free. First of all crime takes places regularly around parks. Can you imagine what takes place at night around that area. And the second worse place is under interstate highway overpasses. That B&B is practically under I 10. Here's a few suggestions. Stay in the FQ and don't risk your life.

tay at Chateau Bourbon, Le Marais, Mazarin, Provincial, St. Marie, Place D Armes, Iberville Suites, Monteleone, Dauphine Orleans or Prince Conti.

I failed to add. Evertime I have walked down Rampart in the daytime usually around 4 PM and I have done this many times I felt unsafe. The area on and near Rampart is terrible. Do yourself a favor and stay in a better location. Take a look at a B&B in Marigny. Enjoy your trip.

Ecohing what others have said: we finished a tour with a group, and wandered by ourselves to the LA park. This was in the mid afternoon, and we couldn't wait to get back to the French Quarter/
