Rancho Mirage
 

Planning a trip to Rancho Mirage at the end of March, early April in 2003. I have reservations at the Hilton Garden Inn in Rancho Mirage. I realize that there are a number of beautiful and unique desert resorts in the area, however the $ 110 per night at the Hilton G.I. is more of what I can afford. Any reactions, and/or advice.<BR><BR>In addition I will drive to San Diego after 5 days in R.M., what route provides scenery and a &quot;different&quot; experience than endless freeway?<BR><BR>Thanks for all of your help here.

Just like the post that expects to see something between Oakland and Yosemite Kpatt expects to see something between Palm Springs and SD. I guess living here my whole life I have more of an understanding of the terrain of CA. Really people, once you're away from the typical tourist areas there is only living going on in the towns and cities of CA, not much else. Just keep driving!

There is a route through the mountains, but it is sort of a pain to drive it. I think it is the 74, but don't take my word for it. And be sure you have a full tank of gas before you leave.<BR><BR>Rancho Mirage has a wonderful dining complex called The River, there are about 8 restaurants, some shops and a movie theater there. Have a wonderful vacation!

Kpatt:<BR><BR>I think you would be pleased with and fine at the HGI. It is brand new and well located, right next to the aforementioned River.<BR><BR>I highly suggest you take Highway 74 over the Santa Rosa Mountains to San Diego. To do it, you would need to go east on Highway 111 to Monterey and turn right (south). Monterey becomes Highway 74. It will take you to the junction of Highway 371, which in turn leads to a junction with Highway 79 to Temecula. This will deposit you at Interstate 15, which you will take south to San Diego. Just follow the signs and you will be fine. <BR><BR>If you are going downtown, stay on the 15 and follow the signs to the 163. If your destination is somewhere in North County (Oceanside, Carlsbad, Cardiff, Solana Beach, Del Mar or even La Jolla), you probably want to take Highway 78 west to Interstate 5. <BR><BR>Words of caution: if the weather is iffy, i.e. rain, or snow above 3,500 feet, you might be advised to go the long way around up I-10, then 79 south at Beaumont, through Hemet to Winchester Road and Temecula. Highway 74, while pretty, is curvy, two lane and can be particularly treacherous in bad weather.<BR><BR>For good, but affordable, dining I suggest El Mirasol in Palm Desert, Thai Smile, also in P.D. Trader Joe's in P.D. is also a good spot to buy good quality, but inexpensive gourmet picnic items.<BR><BR>Best of Luck.<BR>PSL
