Rancho Bernardo - the Courtyard by Marriott for 59.00

We can get this rate (thru a friend who works for Marriott) - for this weekend - has anyone stayed here? I know it's far from the beach but the price is right. Or we can get the Residence Inn on Kearney Mesa St for the same price. Opinions?

its far from anything and the traffic can be horrendous - daughter used to work there and live in Carlsbad and she
still shudders when she thinks of the time she sat in traffic going no where

sunburn, what about the Residence Inn location in central san diego?

paula1470 Sep 13th, 2006 05:27 PM

sunbum is right. Absolutely do not stay in Rancho Bernardo, you will spend your whole time sitting on the 15 freeway.

The Residence Inn is on Kearny Mesa off the 163. I checked the reviews on trip advisor and they aren't bad. You will be a lot closer to downtown San Diego, Balboa Park, La Jolla. etc. I wouldn't say that the area is very attractive-just lots of businesses, car lots, etc but it's a decent neighborhood. If you have to stay at one of these two, the Residence Inn would be much better location wise.

I would do Rancho Bernardo over Kearny Mesa..I have not stayed there but have seen it and there are some great restaurants in RB and you can take 56 West to Del Mar and La Jolla in about 10-15 minutes..the weekend traffic shouldn't be a problem at all..
French Market Grille in RB is delicious
El Bizocho at the RBI
Cavallion in Rancho Santa Fe/Santa Luz
Have fun!

I live not too far from Rancho Bernardo, it's the suburb next to mine. Yes, I-15 is jammed during rush hour, but the rest of the time it's fine. You can easily avoid the busiest times. Rancho Bernardo is a very nice, upscale suburb. As TT mentioned, there are a lot of nice places to eat nearby, some chain, some not. The Courtyard is located at the end of a cul-de-sac which has some office buildings (mainly medical and legal) and a church (which used to be a movie theater!). The back of the hotel overlooks Webb park and its lake. There is a great dim sum restaurant a short stroll across the park, the Pearl. As TT mentioned, the French Market Grille is not too far and Bernardo's is even closer

I agree with TT that RB would be much more pleasant the Kearny Mesa St, which is right off Clairemont Mesa Blvd.

Hi Barbara!
I forgot all about Bernard'O..
Love love love that place!

orangetravelcat Sep 13th, 2006 07:31 PM

Based on some of your comments, we'll take a chance on the Courtyard in RB. For that price, we're willing to sit in traffic if it comes to that. We can avoid traveling during rush hour so hopefully it won't be too bad. And thanks for the restaurant recommendations! Will report back next week.

Although I will still stick to my story about traffic on I 15, I do agree that the Rancho Bernardo area is much better than Kearny Mesa. Since you will be here on the weekend, it shouldn't be too bad. Just give yourself driving time to get to the beach, La Jolla, etc.

My MIL lives there so for me that would be enough reason to avoid it at all costs :D, but the traffic shouldn't be too bad on the weekend and it is better than Kearney Mesa, but you might be able to do better closer to La Jolla or Del Mar on priceline.

We just got back - and we ended up staying at the Courtyard Solana Beach which turned out to be a great location. So much better, I'm sure, than either of the other locations would have been. We had a wonderful weekend.

TahitiTams Sep 17th, 2006 05:08 PM

orangetravelcat..
Did you get the $59 for the Courtyard in Solana Beach as well?
If we all had known that SB was an option, I am sure all of us who responded would of told you that Solana Beach would be the ticket..
Glad you had a great time!

paula1470 Sep 17th, 2006 05:12 PM

Glad you had a good time and enjoyed our beautiful weekend. Solana Beach is a much better location than the other two.

orangetravelcat Sep 18th, 2006 04:26 AM

No, we didn't get the 59 rate but we got a 99 rate. loved solana beach. didn't know solana beach was an option when i initially posted.
