Rainy Sat. night in DC
My mother and I will be arriving in DC this Sat. and had hoped to walk around and see some of the monuments, etc. Now with the rainy cold forecast I'm at a loss with what to do with her. Any suggestions? What's open?

I was just in DC last weekend and our weather was the same...We went to the museum of natural history late Friday afternoon, it is open until 7:30 on Fridays and Saturdays right now (check web to confirm). The Orchid and Natural Geographic exhibits were excellent! We then had dinner at Andale (Mexican, make reservations) which is a block off of the Mall. There are also some momuments at night that happen rain or shine, just type in "monuments at night dc" on google and they should come up...we didn't get to go on one, but we're hoping to on our next visit. Dress warm, bring an umbrella and try to make the best of it!

That shold say TOURS of the monuments at night - sorry!

It's such a bummer to have all this rain-thanks for your quick response. I 'll check the hours at the museums-I didn't think any would be open in the evening but that would certainly help.
Where did you stay? Any other tips? |
There's a free concert each night at Kennedy Center 6pm. Take Metro to Foggy Bottom and the free KC shuttle is at the curb just slightly to your left as you come up the escalator.
Stay afterwards for one of the "paid" peformances. The play "Shear Madness" is hilarious. Google Kennedy Center for what else is playing. Weather forecast isn't always right. Was suppose to rain & snow earlier this month when we went down. It was sunny most of 3 of the 4 days and we never saw snow & just a little rain. |
You're welcome! I posted a trip report...if you search "DC" you should find it, or if you click on my name I think it should come up...We stayed at the Topza Hotel in DuPont Circle and we've also stayed at the Jury's Doyle in DuPont...for us that's our favorite part of the city - fun, safe, tons of great restaurants, good window shopping, Metro station, etc. Tips - if you enjoy dining out and want a nice dinner on Saturday, make reservations!! We felt fortunate that we did as many people were turned away while we were eating at several places...
