Rainier accommodations
 

I am aware of the 2 lodges at Mt Rainier and am not sure whether to book there or to find a self-contained condo or cabin with a kitchen - that is not too isolated, which we might prefer. Cost is not an issue, really. Any suggestions from someone who frequents the area? We also prefer the South rim, I think. Thanks!!!

I am eager to see what others tell you. There are few lodging options in or near Mount Rainier National Park. It is usually visited as a day trip from Seattle or Tacoma.

same here (curious to see the answers to this). once you get off I-5 i don't remember seeing much in the way of lodging options out that way.

I usually camp, so I don't have firsthand experience with any of these, but there are quite a few lodging options near Rainier. I know many people that rent cabins outside the park, since these places are usually more comfortable, better equipped and a better value than staying in one of the park lodges, and a quick google search turned up this list. The downside, is, of course, that you miss out on being right AT the mountain for sunrise, sunset, after the crowds leave for the day, etc. I'm sure you can find more options if you search online.

There is also the Cedar Creek Treehouse, if you like the sound of staying high up in a tree.

We stayed outside the park at Whistlin' Jack's Lodge - which has individual cabins set on the river, some with hot tubs on the deck. We really liked it there and it was short drive to the park.

I have friends who stayed at the Crystal Mountain condos last year - but believe they are in the Sunrise area-
they were happy with the condos - can get more info for you if you are interested

Thanks for all of the info. I checked out the Treehouse website. Awesome! But, too late. We decided to simply stay at Paradise - since it is in the park itself. It is our very first trip there and found it to be practical this time.

Either Crystal or Paradise are fine enough. Like most national park concession lodges, you shouldn't get your hopes up too high for Paradise (sounds funny, doesn't it?) - last time we were there it was definitely showing its age. But the mountain is <i>right there</i> and you ought to have a fine time, especially in the day before the buses arrive.
