Rainbow Room NYC ...Black Tie????
Does the Rainbow Room require coat/tie or is black tie the dress attire? Is a nice dress sufficient
for a woman or is it formal? I have read conflicting reports. Also, how is the food and the band? Any comments are greatly appreciated. |
Haven't been there for some years now but it used to be men wore jacket and tie and women a dress or nice slacks/suit - anything except t-shirts and jeans. It was not a place where you had to dress formally. They played nice soft music and the food was alright if not good. I don't recall any dancing.

"fred & ginger " on the dance floor and "nick and nora" at the bar...about the most glamorous place to go anywhere on earth..much of the glamour tied up in history and tradition of Manhattan and all that. The Rainbow is supposed to have a new chef with much improved food in the gourmet american style. I would imagine not too many will be in semi formal attire but you certainly can wear a tux if you want..go with the fantasy. By the way, the place for entertainment at the top of the Rock is Stars. A more intimate lounge with top notch entertainment: sophisticated jazz mainly with the likes of Rosemary Clooney, etc. Can be hard to get reservations at times. check now..

We went to Rainbow & Stars in April. A tux is not necessary, but most gentlemen would probably feel most comfortable in a dark suit. For the ladies, a very nice dress and perhaps a string of pearly is just fine. I also saw dressy pantsuits and much more casual (but still dressy) attire. We saw a few sequins and bugle beads and gold lame, but this is definitely not necessary. We had dinner elsewhere, but folks in the bar told us the food was very good, if pricey. (Saw the menu and everything looked very appealing.) Be sure to have a drink in the other cocktail lounge - the Rainbow Promenade - there's an awesome view of the Empire State building lit up at night from there. Incidentally, we saw Rosemary Clooney. Fabulous!

Ah! A night to remember! Wonderful food, beautiful
music, and the atmosphere is lovely. A tux and formal is not necessary, coat and tie for men and cocktail dress or nice pant outfit for the ladies. Sit back, ejoy, and take it all in...this is something out of old Hollywood. |
We agree with everyone. Its a lovely place for a romantic dinner or supper. The ambiance is great, the music very good with a perfect band and good food too. Have a drink at the Promenade Bar, wonderful view of south Manhattan, Hudson River and New Jersey.
