R U down until time to make plans for the "next" trip?

Since Paris last April, haven't really had anywhere to go. Life is getting in the way; school, games, events. I love all of this, but I find that I am a little depressed unless I am making plans for my "next" trip...you too?

missypie Sep 13th, 2006 05:42 AM

I'm always planning one or two trips ahead.

Devonmcj Sep 13th, 2006 05:48 AM

I live to plan trips. Most of my friends (with one great exception) think I'm a little nuts about it.

GoTravel Sep 13th, 2006 05:51 AM

Not really but I think it is because I live on the beach in a resort area.

I do miss NYC if it has been more than a couple months since my last visit. Actually, it is more of a longing.

Weird huh?

tcreath Sep 13th, 2006 05:57 AM

I always have at least two trips in the works, so that helps keep me occupied. We went to Italy in March but I've been keeping myself busy by planning for our trips to Croatia/Slovenia in November and Ireland in February. That helps keep me from getting down about not being on vacation!

I always try to have another trip or something else exciting to work on when I get home from a trip, otherwise, yes, I get depressed and anxious.

I call it PTD - Post Trip Depression. :D

kansasmom Sep 13th, 2006 06:22 AM

I hoped I wasn't the only one who felt like that...

TKT Sep 13th, 2006 06:27 AM

Always panning at least one trip. During down times at work it helps, makes me feel like I'm on vacation a little bit. I use restaurant.com and rewards network to get dining discounts. I like to try and find places where I can use both at the same time.

sweetsailing Sep 13th, 2006 06:33 AM

Yes, I am always planning the next trip. I am planning for Wash DC next summer and already thinking about the summer after that. Devonmcj, LOL, my friends think I am nuts too.

So, a little twist on this question, any of you as passionate about reading travel books as I am. My DH thinks I am nuts because every destination means that I will likely purchase about 6 - 12 travel books on the topic and read every page. My friends know if they are thinking about the same destination, they can come to my "library" to learn more.

My DH learned about my detailed trip planning when we went on a 2 week trip to New England about 1 year after we were married. We were driving on the highway up the coast of Maine and I suddenly told him to take this exit, take a right and then a left. I told him there was a great apple orchird over there. He thought I was nuts because I wasn't looking at a map or book and he wanted to know how I knew there was an apple orchird over there. We did have a great time picking apples!

I always have something in the works. Planning a trip keeps me going.

Heavens Sep 13th, 2006 04:57 PM

Yes, there was a dry spell for a while. No trips. Now I am planning a trip to Texas with a side trip to Austin and it is amazing how it puts a zing in my step. Forgot how much I missed planning, researching, and just plain dreaming about going somewhere...

BayouGal Sep 13th, 2006 05:03 PM

I think I am always in the state of planning, even if it's for a weekend trip. It's a necessity for me! LoL We leave Friday, and I'm already feeling a little antsy that I don't know when/where we'll travel after Wyoming and Montana. ;-)

Neopolitan Sep 13th, 2006 05:06 PM

We returned home yesterday. This is the first time in many years that I have not already had at least one or two trips well planned and some reservations made when we returned from the previous trip. Right now I have nothing brewing. I'm starting to get the shakes.

My name is Patrick. I'm a travelholic.

seetheworld Sep 13th, 2006 05:06 PM

I'm always planning. I think it's the only way I can survive, lol. I caught my husband checking the daily weather forecast for Portugal -- he confessed that he does that every day. I like his way of thinking. :D

BayouGal Sep 13th, 2006 05:08 PM

LoL, Neo. That's so funny, but it's also so true it kinda scary! :-D

DebitNM Sep 13th, 2006 05:09 PM

BG -- have a terrific trip! Pack warm clothers...the temps are headed down this weekend out this way.

Highs 40, lows 20 . . . this hot blooded Louisiana girl may freeze to death! ;-)

BayouGal Sep 13th, 2006 05:32 PM

Even with it cold, we'll still be able to enjoy the great out-of-doors and hike a lot, right?!

paula1470 Sep 13th, 2006 05:38 PM

Patrick-too funny. I think that most of us on this board can say the same.

Heavens-I feel just the way you do. I haven't had a big trip since we went to Memphis, Mississippi and New Orleans in Feb. Luckily for me, I have had quite a few business trips that I've been able to turn into a mini-one day vacation. Also, since I make my own work travel arrangements, checking out hotels and flights makes me feel like I am planning something.

GoTravel-I know what you mean about NYC. I was there in Jan and it feels like a million years ago. My older DD had planned to move there this month but now isn't going until Jan. So will just have to wait. Also the costs of hotel, etc this time of year is just too crazy for me.

I think if I'm not planning a trip for myself then I am helping a friend or family member. It is hard when you are helping others, though, because you have to stay home!!

mah1980 Sep 13th, 2006 05:46 PM

I'm leaving for a week in Mexico on Sunday and I'm already toying around with Belize, Panama, Anguilla, St. Barts, St. Lucia, St. John, or Quebec City for Spring 2007. Always having a trip in the back burner, and actively planning the trip, keeps me from getting bummed.

I love using Google images to look at pictures of my next destination when it will be a while until I can go.

CaliNurse Sep 13th, 2006 07:07 PM

BayouGal, Mah1980. DebitNM, all you luckies who have imminent trips--bon voyage!
Mah, a vote here for St John in May (though i've not been to your other choices--admittedly, not very objective!).
Heavens, yes, like you and the other folks, i get "down" and life doesn't feel completely complete unless there's some trip-planning going on, no matter how long or brief the dreamed-about trip will be.
But sometimes it gets overwhelming too. Anyone else experience that?
I have two weeks off work in Oct, and found myself making detailed plans for both Maui/Oahu and Paris/London but wasn't sure which I'd do. All of a sudden, it got to me--too many decisons about good-deal plane fares, hotels. allotting hotel points, allotting ff miles, allotting $$$, juggling assorted other stuff. Aaaarrrggghhh!! Y'all may think I'm crazy, but i decided to instead take a relatively simple, but equally fun, trip to Texas instead.

Heavens Sep 14th, 2006 09:05 AM

Yes, that is OK too. Sometimes you have to keep it simple to keep it fun and do-able...

The point is, you are going somewhere. It isn't necessarily WHERE I go, but that I go. I get a special pleasure out of going somewhere that I have never been, to explore.

My sister and I came up with this Austin side trip, something we have never done (going away just the two of us) and all the sudden I perked up.

It is by no means exotic, but it is a change from my routine, and it is new and stimulating. Weird, I think, that I am finding so much fun in it.

Thanks. I think we are all on the same plane...pun intended.

cmcfong Sep 14th, 2006 09:10 AM

Mah, if your trip will be Jan-Mar do consider Panama. It is a gorgeous country with terrific opportunities for adventure activities, cultural/historical interests, birding, or just hanging out on the ocean with some fresh corbina and Ron Cortez. I grew up there and go back every chance I get!

And yes, I am a travelholic, too. Otherwise what on earth would I be doing on this board forty times a day?

angethereader Sep 14th, 2006 09:23 AM

Patrick - I think we're all tripaholics, that's why we're at our daily meeting place here.

We have a weekend in Chicago that I'm fine tuning (I don't really need to but I want to). Then nothing.

Our son's current girlfriend is from Australia. So I'm online looking at a trip there. We wouldn't be able to go until (our)spring (their fall) of 2008 - but it's never too early to dream.

Otherwise I might start getting the shakes.

Writing a lenthy trip report and pouring over the 500 pictures we took is the only way I didn't sink into deep depression after our last big trip to Japan.

*Sigh* I guess March 2008 isn't THAT far away.
