Quiet hotels in Monterey California?
 

Traveling to Monterey in September for family wedding, looking for a nice quiet hotel, we don’t need pools or ocean views. Staying 4 nights, wedding venue is at the Cooper Molera Barns.

Any budget? Are the dates anywhere near Labor Day weekend??

If you can spend the $$, I recommend the Old Monterey Inn.

We stayed at Sunset Inn in Pacific Grove. Very quiet, you can walk to beach, no restaurant. It’s like motel type place but updated. I’d stay there again.

I’m happy to see it’s not the weekend of the jazz festival! If the couple has created a website with info about the wedding, they may have included hotel suggestions. There may be special group rates for wedding guests.

We enjoyed the Monterey Plaza Hotel, nice rooms, very quiet, 5-10 minute walk to the aquarium. No idea on current rates though as we’ve done property rentals in PG the last few years.

No idea about hotels but I would stay in Pacific Grove and not Monterey if you want quieter.

Seven gables Inn Pacific Grove should be close to your budget. Suspect Monterey Plaza hotel will be over your budget but nice hotel.

mjs, I think you would be surprised to see the current rates at the Seven Gables Inn..

I do agree that Pacific Grove would likely be more quiet than Monterey.

Pacific Grove is lovely and outside of the Monarch Butterfly migration season, quiet. You will need transportation to your celebration sites. There are a variety of motels there We enjoyed our nightly stroll to the ocean when we were there.

Our go-to place in Monterey is Casa Munras. Reasonably priced, nice rooms and amenities, and their restaurant is really good. It's an easy walk (located in downtown Monterey) to Alvarado Street (the main drag) and Fisherman's Wharf.

We've stayed in most every property in the downtown area of Monterey for the last 40 years (February conference at the Portola/Marriott), and Case Munras has been our annual home for the last 10 or so years. Previously, we stayed a number of years at the Hotel Pacific, but it was overpriced and they nickel & dimed you for everything. Casa Munras, these days, now charges for parking ($17/night), but it's less than everywhere else.

I stayed in this hotel once for a few days, it was fantastic and perfectly quiet. I suppose hotels could be noisy if you were dead center near cannery row or something, I don't understand all those comments from my experience (about how noisy Monterey is).

Its rooms are about $350 a night during your dates, it appears. It's just south of the Presidio and very convenient for traveling other places.

Agree to look first in PG. Sunset Inn is a reasonable choice.

Yikes. 7 Gables was less than $300 in March 2022. I have been to the Monterey/Carmel area at least 30 times in my life and have stayed at many places. The real is generally pretty quiet except maybe Cannery Row during the day. Evenings and nights should be quiet. Have not stayed at the Hotel Pacific for 15 or more years. Location is fine and there is parking underneath. Rooms were all junior suites if I recall correctly. Walking distance to many restaurants. Free breakfast and wine and cheese happy hour? I would use Booking.com for your dates to see what looks reasonable and maybe some of us can comment.

Pacific Grove has two bus lines if transportation is a concern. Sunset Inn is well located for using the public bus but I'd probably rent a car from whatever airport you fly into (assuming). Downtown Monterey has limited (and expensive) parking and you may not want to ride the bus if it's a fancy wedding!! I've only ever stayed downtown Monterey when my employer paid at a conference. After that we had a free night and hadn't reserved. We drove around Pacific Grove and had a hard time finding anything. It was one of the low rent places and the guy running it was missing a front tooth!

So do reserve ahead wherever you stay. That was 1997 and we were golfing in Pacific Grove when the foursome ahead of me saw John Denver's plane go down, although of course we didn't know who it was.

What's the highest priority? Staying IN Monterey (close/walking distance to wedding events)? A quiet property? Or keeping within budget?

Just as an aside (you never know how good you have it at the time), I was newly married and an E3 sailor attending language school at the Presidio of Monterey in 1968. Fortunately, my wife and I rented a cottage on the hill between the Presidio and Fisherman's Wharft. Rent was $100 per month... Lived there a year...

Veterans/retirees/active duty can still stay at DLIFLC - great option for budget accommodations if one qualifies.
