Quick trip to Arizona memorial???

My husband and I are spending 9 days on Maui and flying home through Honolulu. We wondered if it is possible to fit in a side trip to the Arizona memorial before we fly out of Honoulu at 8:30 pm. Right now we leave Maui for Honolulu in the evening, but we can change this to a morning flight if it is possible to get a car and see the memorial before our flight home. Also, do any car rental companies allow you to transfer your car from Maui to Oahu without paying for an extra day?

I don't see why you wouldn't have time to see the memorial. I think it's one of the most moving things I have seen. It will stay with you forever. Do try to get there early in the morning, preferably when it opens. The earlier, the better.

I agree w/ Cheri that the memorial is a must see (my words not hers). I'm not sure what time your flight gets into Oahu but the last trip to the memorial is around 2:00 and the tickets for that will be gone by around 11-12:00 (best guesstimate). I wanted to do a similar type trip this past summer but ended up spending one night on Oahu and went early the next morning and then flew to Big Island on an evening flight. By doing so, it allowed us to hike the Diamond Head crator (approx. 1 1/2 hrs needed) after seeing the Arizona and still had plenty of time to catch our 4:00 flight. PS: The hike was actually recommended by a park ranger at the Arizona Memorial and I'm extremely glad we took his recommendation. Have fun!

Nice thing about the inter island flights there, they run like buses do here.

Thanks for all of your help. We will try to get there for sure. Do any of you know what time it opens for the day? I didn't realize that we had to pick up tickets for the day of the tour, and we would like to go as early as possible.

I can't remember, but I know we went early. (like mayube 9) I'm sure if you ask out there someone will know.

The inter-island flights that someone made reference to.....great deal. We spent the whole day in Oahu and took in the sights at the Memorial..It was so worth it!!!!! You will see a great difference in Maui and Oahu.

Hi Kathy,
We were there last year in July, arrived at the Arizona Memorial about 8.30am, the place was packed. First tickets we could get were for the 9.45am tour. The whole thing (video, talk, boat to the memorial) took around an hour and a half. Well worth it, very moving. While we waited, we walked across (5 mins) to a submarine which my husband found very interesting (USS Bowfin?).

The hike up Diamond Head is terrific, hot and dry but the view at the top is spectacular. Be prepared for lots of steps, a dark tunnel and an unlit spiral staircase. Yes, a hike with a difference!

Have fun, Kay

Kathy, what time is your flight from Maui to Honolulu? The flights start early--like, from 530 a.m.--so if you get to Honolulu early enough, get your car rental and everything out of the way, you can be set to go to the Arizona in no time. And the Arizona is very close to the airport. I guess it depends what else you were planning to do in Honolulu, too.

Kathy,

I agree that a visit to the Arizona Memorial is well worth the effort, but it is very easy to do. I took a day trip to Oahu from Maui summer of '99. I took a 6:45 a.m. flight out of Maui to Honolulu and we got a rental car and headed straight to the Memorial. Got there about 7:30-7:45. We were able to get in for the second showing of the movie and everything worked very smoothly. I thought that driving around in Honolulu was very easy and there were a lot of helpful road signs.

The rest of our day was spent at a flea market at the Aloha Stadium parking lot, and then driving the rental car around coast of the island and getting back to Honolulu about 10:00 p.m. Spent the night and took the same early morning flight back to Maui. I wish we would have taken the time to visit the Illioni (sp?) Royal Palace. I have regretted that ever since.
