Quick Question re: Charleston and Savannah
 

We are presently in our motorhome in Wilmington, NC, waiting for the weather to improve, which it is supposed to do tomorrow. We have 7 days set aside to see Charleston and Savannah - we have never visited either. My question is: 3 days in Charleston and 4 in Savannah or vice versa?

Any way you split it will be great. Personally, I'd do 2 or 3 in each and then head down to Jekyll Island for 1 or 2 days. Stop in Beaufort in between.

You will get divisive answers on this one. Some prefer Savannah some prefer Charleston. Both are great places to visit but they each have their own "feel" to them. I happen to prefer Savannah because it seems to move at a slower pace and is more relaxing than Charleston. Strolling the squares is our favorite thing to do.

I am in the Brian vice versa camp. Love Charleston!
I also join Starrs in the break up the trip with a stop in Beaufort. Great little town.

I hope you are right about the weather, grey and very humid in the Piedmont area.

We tow a Smartcar behind the motorhome, so the narrow streets shouldn't be a problem.
I'll look int Beaufort and Jeckyll Island as well.

I did a trip report on Jeckyll. Wonderful spot. Beaufort is a favorite small town, very charming and some excellent restaurants..

4 in Charleston
1 Beaufort
2 in Savannah

I'll be there in 10 days, we just don't go to Savannah any more. We did love it, dark, mysterious, a the book!

Now I just think the recession hit it far harder then Charleston and it is becoming down at heel.

Charleston is heading in the other direction and has some of the most forward thinking restaurants in South.

Very unspoilt compared to most of the Sea Islands

I'm in the "longer in Charleston". There is just more to do with the plantations. And Beaufort is a good idea.
On your way to Charleston, stop in Brookgreen Gardens in Litchfield for a couple of hours of enjoying the art and gardens. And go across the highway to Atalanta, the Huntington's home on the ocean.
And do a small tour of Georgetown just south of Litchfield/Pawley's. Wonderful Revolutionary War era homes!!
And while you are in that area, have a great seafood lunch in Murrell's Inlet or Pawley's. The Island Deli and Café in Pawley's has a great lunch (and dinner).

No, our kids and DH have been. I think that is the name I was looking for instead of Hunting?

It's the island near Georgetown. It seems to be packed with wildlife and the visitor centre on the mainland nurtures red wolves, my son is absolutely in love with them.

It is a much longer haul from Edisto than we had intended but it looks worth the trip.

I was there once, years ago. It's a beautiful island, but the alligators there are huge! Someone once said that that island is where they relocate the "big ones" to live out their lives. I don't know about that...but they are big.

We just got back from Savannah and Tybee Island. Savannah is one of our favorite places to be. We stayed more on Tybee this time, wedding and Pirate Fest, but I would agree with the people who say three in Charleston and four in Savannah.

It's beautiful in both places and you'll have a wonderful time no matter how you divide your time.
