Questions about rain in NYC what is it like?

I will be in NYC next week (3-31 through 4-4) and have been looking at the weather forcasts and they say it may rain while I am there. I am from florida and when it rains here it can be bad, heavy and rain all day. What is it like when it rains in NYC is it a heavy rain? Does it usually rain all day? When I was in Londom I did not think the rain was so bad it was more like a mist. A big part of the fun of being in NYC is walking around the city I would hate to be stuck inside all day. Thanks in advance for the answers! I love this board.

It's really impossible to say. I have friends in Flordia who say that it rarely rains all day there. The rain usually comes down for an hour in the afternoon and then the sun is out again. So, as you can see, two people in the same place will you tell you very different things.

Springtime in NYC .. it can rain all day or briefly or not at all. We usually do not get the insane downpours like Florida, but they happen too.

You just never know.

Bring an umbrella & raincoat and, if it's bad, plan to spend time in museums, theater or department stores.

The 10-day forecast says "few showers & showers" The weather could change between now and your visit. Just come prepared -- the temperature is still cool here and even a shower could chill you to the bone (unlike Florida where temps are milder).

Just bring a rain jacket, umbrella, and a smile and you'll have a great time. :)

We'll be there around the same time and have been watching the weather forecasts (which change daily -- one day had Sunday sunny, the next day it said Sunday would be cloudy with rain). Last year it said it was supposed to rain all weekend and it was beautiful and sunny the whole time.
I like to check out the Times Square web cam to see what people are wearing -- yesterday it went all the way from short sleeve shirts (when the sun was out) to winter coats. Still not sure what kind of outerwear to pack (besides rain gear). I live in a similar climate to New York (today is unseasonably warm in the 80's -- by end of week will probably be in the 50's again here).

Hoping for good weather, but plan on having a good time anyway.

I will never believe weather.com again. For a recent trip to Amelia Island, they said rain for every day of my visit. Meanwhile, we didn't have one drop while we were there. So plan for rain, but despite what weathe reports say, you could end up having great, dry weather

Rain gear! Just an umbrella. No need for boots or a rain coat. It's weather, whether it will or won't. A small collapsible umbrella, maybe a rain cap and go on your way. Believe me, New Yorkers don't stop what they are doing because it rains. Of course, you can always pop in to eat, do a museum or other inside activity, but it's not necessary.

Lately, the rain has been light, mostly overnight; but who knows. And temps can be anywhere from the 40-70s, nights can still go down to 30s; be prepared.

LOL. Didn't even think of boots. Have an all purpose coat that is waterproof, collapsible umbrella and $2 plastic

Didn't mean to post that. Actually they are $1 plastic throw away ponchos that have come in handy many times when an unexpected downpour began. Trying to avoid packing any other coats -- will just plan on layering I guess. As usual. Rain will not keep us inside, it's just more fun to go to the parks, etc. when it is nice out and they of full of people. We will just be very flexible.

Thanks for the answers. We have some ponchos for the kids and are going to make sure to bring umbrellas. We are planning on having a great time regardless

I adore going to the Zeigfield Movie House on 54th when it is raining.....one of the most amazing movie houses left in our country.
