We just spent a lovely couple of days in Sonoma this past weekend. I recommend checking out Buena Vista Winery, the oldest winery in California, I believe (ca.1857) - it's just a couple miles outside of dowtown Sonoma on Old Winery Road. It has a a nice tasting room, cool shady picnic areas (and food for sale), knowledgeable and helpful staff, and tasty wines. Gundlach-Bunschu is another fave, and we really enjoyed the tour of Benzinger Family Winery and hearing about their sustainable organic practices. Also, in town, Roessler Winery has a nice tasting room just off the square, and a lovely selection of pinot noirs to samples.
Don't try to pack too many wineries in - it can take longer than you think at each place, and on the weekends, it can be crowded. Also, have a designated driver - those samples can really add up to a buzz!
