Questions about Carmel, Monterey and Hearst Castle
If we stay in Carmel or Monterey, can we drive down to Hearst Castle and drive back on the same day?
Also, could someone recommend a hotel or a B&B near Hearst Castle. natjgc |
Hearst Castle is supposed to be 2 1/2 hrs south of Carmel one way. We are doing this trip in July. From all my research - it sounds as if you should allow much more time for the drive. 1) the drive is one of the most spectacular stretches and you will want to make numerous stops and 2) because of the views, the traffic is often quite heavy and will add more time as well.
We are planning on spending one night in Cambria and then heading back to Carmel so that we don't feel rushed and can really appreciate this part of the coast. |
Taking Highway 1 is a highlight. IF you get an early start and reserved ahead tour for Hearst, then a day trip is doable. Just do not count on full 55mph all the way. Take some time for stops, it's fantastic scenery. :)

Yes, all in one day is feasible but in my opinion, too rushed and exhausting with not enough time to stop at all the beautiful scenic spots and have time to savor the natural beauty. Spending a night in Cambria on the way to the Castle is a great idea.

Thanks, I agree that it could be rushed and the scenery is great so I think we need to spend the night near the castle.
Hmileski, Where in Cambria are you staying ? What other towns are around there? natjgc |
I would not try to do it all in one day. if you are going to be heading back to carmel after your one night stay you might want to look into staying at the Ragged Point Inn, it's a little north of Hearst Castle and right at the start of Big Sur. we've stayed in Cambria before, the moonstone beach area. There is a stretch of motels along the coast but Ragged Point is all by itself and really high on the bluff over the ocean. we like that location better. Also make sure you have time to stop at Pedras Blancas to see the elephant seal colony.

Thanks Joyce. I'll look into that. Natalie

agree with montereybob, take your time, highway 1 is one of the most interesting and beautiful routes in north america.

hey there - sorry I've not been on in a while. My reservation is at Moonstone Landing in Cambria. It was rated very well on tripadvisor.com.... www.moonstonelanding.com
have a wonderful trip! |
Moonstone Drive is the place to stay in Cambria. We've stayed at most of the motels there and have been as pleased with the Best Western Fireside as with any of the others. (*Few rooms on the drive have full ocean views.)
