Question on Pittsburgh's slogan
My students are doing a little exercise whereby they match U.S. cities with their slogans. For example, Chicago is "The Windy City," etc.
For the life of me, I can't think of Pittsburgh's slogan. Does it have one? |
Used to be "Steel City" I think--not sure if they still promote that!
|
I think it might be the Steel City
|
"Iron City"...like the ((b))!
Used to be "Smokey City" until it was cleaned up in the 70s-80s. Yet another "TitleTownUSA" when the Pirates were "Family" and the Steelers actually WON playoff games! Kalburgher |
Pittsburgh has formulated an Image Gap Committee ? a group of more than 90 business leaders and economic development experts ? because leaders believe the city needs a slogan.
"Pittsburgh's image needs to be burnished because right now ? Pittsburgh still is not on the radar screen. It suffers from a lack of reputation", said New Jersey-based Dennis Donovan. A quote from a Pitsburgh local website. So see, Brooklyn Bomber--you and your students weren't off base at all. Even Pittsburghers aren't sure their city has a slogan. I would associate "Steel City" with Pittsburgh more than any other nickname. (I think the business people above are trying to come up with an ad campaign slogan, not a nickname). Green Bay WI gets credit for being the original Title Town USA. It even comes up on some search engines if you simply enter title town usa. |
Interesting. The only thing that came to mind at the time was Three Rivers Stadium, but that's not a slogan.
|
I'm not sure of the official slogan but I've always thought of it as: "At least its not Cleveland".
|
I grew up there, and "Steel City" was its slogan even after the steel industry died. The "Most Livable City" moniker couldn't stick, not with more young people leaving than moving into the area. It's a reasonably nice city with truly beautiful sections and a pretty good arts scene-- but nothing culturally to keep young people there, unfortunately.

As a former resident (not a native, either!) I'd vote for 'most under-rated city in America.' Personally, I hope the charms of Pittsburgh remain undiscovered!
|
I was preparing a lengthy e-mail about why Pittsburgh stays "under-rated", but I'm risking a bitter flaming from current and former citizens of the city if I do. Suffice it to say that its charms will remain very well-hidden.

Oh come on, rjw....give us all something controversial to chew on.
|
Old Joke:
Employee was at a cocktail party and says: "The only good things to come out of Pittsburgh are hookers and football players" His Boss says: "Hey wait one minute. My WIFE is from Pittsburgh!" "Oh really? What position does she play?" ouch b( Tough Crowd!! |
Or, the only good thing which ever comes out of Pittsburgh is an empty bus.

I had a girlfriend who lived in Jackson, Ca.
I asked her "Why is there only a one lane road leading into town but 2 lanes out of town?". Yep. Ex-girlfriend now. >:-) |
