Maybe because they can spell the words: Billionaires
Millionaires
Yep. Millionaires, billionaires and those smart enough to have bought that little shack 15 years ago when we all thought the prices couldn't go any higher. Hindsight is 20/20.

As we are on the subject of scams, what do you all think about a condo rental that charges $8 every time you use there phone, even if it's a local or toll free call?

Sarah Aug 27th, 2002 02:58 PM

High Nina good story.
Don't know if you have rented before just want to bare in mind that you have to pick your battles with rental agencies where I have been they give the cleaning fee regardless of the state of the apartment. Does sound like your agency was playing according to Market terms on Nantucket. Thing is though don't you worry about getting black balled from future rentals? I worry about not being able to return if a rental is a hot find. Too easy for the agency to say she was a pain last year let's go with someone laid back. This can happen even if you are totally in the right. I also worry about the word of mouth factor in small communities such as Nantucket. What you are telling us did not warrant black balling just want you to keep it in mind for the next rental.

I also imagine that a lot of a**holes make there way up to nantucket and working in an a**hole industry like I do I doubt that these people contain themselves on vacation. Not implying anything about your complaint just thinking people complain loud and long when disappointed in Nantucket. So you might be fine in Nantucket I am just warning you for future complaints.

meant to say sounds like agency was NOT playing according to Market terms.

As the owner of a vacation home in Lake Tahoe for twenty years, I can attest to the fact that different peoples' ideas of what is clean can vary greatly. When I used to use a rental agency, I found everthing from people who left the place spotless, others who did a pretty good job (only minor cleaning needed), and still others who left the place an absolute mess. Inevitably, except for the very worst, they all thought they should get back their entire cleaning deposit back. I usually found that the rental agency was pretty fair in their evaluation and their charges, particularly when I was forced to pay for additional cleaning that was sometimes necessary after some people left. However, no matter how fair the rental agency was, it didn't stop the complaints from all the people who thought they should get their entire deposit returned. Combine this with the damage some people did and I finally got fed up and stopped renting.

I've rented cabins in Tahoe many many times and always the cleaning fee is separate from the deposit. Usually the fee is around $100.00, and they do require that you strip the beds, take out the trash, etc., before you leave. Seems normal to me.

As I said, I've rented for 17 years and never had a problem. And as evidenced by the hasty return of our deposit as well as the profuse apology by the cleaning service owner, I know they realize that they had indeed overcharged me.

I have no worries about being "blackballed". We always treat the rental homes as we would our own, and are very respectful. The only time we switch houses is when they are sold to people who don't rent. In fact, the owner of this home asked if we would like the same week next year.

Tony sounds terrible, our rental rates on Kauai just went up, I am guessing this happened because someone trashed a sister property. STINKS had a great deal until these renters decided to cause serious damage, unless of course owner finally saw what he had and decided to get paid for it. Will never know but rate switch and damage problem was too coincidentally in occurrence.

Nina glad it all worked out for you, I would not worry about a thing if I got my money back and had a secure renting relationship with the community. Have to say I am surprised you got any money back at all but I rarely rent on the East Coast.
