Question about Wisconsin
 

Hi I'd like to take the family on a tour of Wisconsin this May, stopping in on all the places that make cheese. My family loves cheese. Does anyone know of some good cheese-making stops in Wisconsin? We like Gouda and the cheddars, of course.

My favorite, Boscobel cheese factory. Also happens to be a really pretty part of the state. There are literally dozens but most are located in the southern half of the state.<BR>There is also a good one in Fennimore which is about 35 miles east of Boscobel.

Earl-two words.........CHEESE CURDS!!!!!Having spent four years of college in Wisconsin,I applaud your cheese tour desires? The southwestern area and even as far up as Oshkosh and Fond du Lac have numerous cheese factories/outlets.Add a few brats,some beers........be still my thighs!!! Have fun-

I think the cheese tour sounds like a hoot. Not sure the kids will approve but what the hey. I used to travel to Wisconsin every month or so and often picked up some local beer and cheeses.

Earl<BR>There is a cheese factory in Alpha, WI on highway 70 near the MN/WI border that is a popular stop for travelers. Also...I don't know where it is right now but we had a special map of Wisconsin that had the locations of cheese factories and breweries all around the state. Maybe the Wi dept of Tourism could help. <BR>Mary

Earl,<BR><BR>I'm new to Wisconsin and I think the cheese idea is fabulous! There are actually cheese shops along the highways to stop and buy various cheeses, as well as sausage and other "Wisconsin" snacks. <BR><BR>Definitely try the cheese curds! (They are much better than the name implies.) The ones that "squeak" are the best!!!! (Once you've had one, you'll know what I mean!)

Check out the baby bahl swiss and take a picture of the giant mouse Igor at the cheese factory in Fenimore!

One bit of non-cheese advice...if anyone tells you to go to the House on the Rock in Wisconsin, DON'T DO IT! This is the worst tourist trap I have been to in my life!

Carr Valley Cheese Factory in LaValle. 5 year or more aged cheddar - marvelous! Even better than the cheese, enjoy the scenery getting there.

Don't miss Neillsville on Hwy 10, pretty much the middle of the state. WCCN radio station has a cool building and also outside is a replica of World's Fair biggest piece of cheese!!! Right down the road is Lynn Diary and not far is Rudolph WI and a nice diary also that I believe gives tours. While in Neillsville plan a stop at the Highground, a beautiful tribute to our veterans. Dear Loangalsal,<BR><BR>I can certainly understand your statement regarding the House on a Rock, but did you ever do the tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin East? I went to Taliesin first, and then House on a Rock. The owner of House on a Rock was always trying to outdo Frank. It was a jealously thing. Knowing this before I visited House on a Rock made the trip more enjoyable, albeit bizarre as it was.<BR><BR>I would recommend going to both homes, for two very different reasons.<BR><BR>Happy Trails,<BR>Paul<BR>

If you get a chance to try deep fried cheese don't pass it up. It's like a pogo or corn dog, but instead of a nasty weiner inside it's filled with delicious hot cheese. You have to eat them with pickles, which are sold along side. I agree with the squeeky cheese curds. We had them in Ontario last summer and the kids couldn't get enough of them.

Heck, try deep fried pickles while you're at it!

My favorite is the Nelson Cheese factory in Nelson. Right on the Mississippi north of LaCrosse. Great cheese and scenery. Squeaky Ceese Curds - YUM!!!
