Question about WDW and surrounding area - April 2006

I'm just starting to plan a holiday to WDW the first 10 days/maybe 2 weeks of April 2006. We've been to WDW before, a few years ago. We have 3 kids age 7, 12 and 13. Plan is to do 5 days on site (probably Grand Floridian) and then 5 or more days somewhere else, driving distance from Orlando. The kids like somewhere with a great pool and some activities. I like somewhere with a fantastic hotel, some quiet (after WDW), beach (good food and shopping would be nice too).
Any ideas would be very welcome.

If you're not too Disney-ized, you might consider the Disney Vero resort, which is about a 2-hour drive from the Orlando area. It has most of what you're looking for.

The Vero area itself got hit hard by the hurricanes and is still rebuilding, but I think the resort is OK and could serve as a base for day trips to other spots -- Sebastian inlet and beaches, West Palm, the Kennedy Space Center.

You'll get some debate about whether the beaches are better on the east coast or west coast, and really it's just a matter of personal preference. In your case, I think the east coast is a shorter drive from Disney so that might influence your thinking.

We just did a split trip this past April. We stayed at LaPlaya on the Gulf coast in Naples. It has all the requirements you mentioned...beautiful calm beach with beach service and lots of pretty seashells, beautiful pools, activities, great food and service and a full service spa. Downtown Naples is a shoppers/dining paradise. We loved our stay, it was very quiet and relaxing but not dull. Also the sunsets are a celebration every night! It is also a 3 hour drive from Orlando, all highway and easy to get to. We do this all the time and it is a snap:) Sometimes you get Disney-ed out and need to relax AFTER your Disney trip. The website is www.laplayaresort.com if interested.

Thank you; I'll look into that. A 2 to 3 hour drive would be fine.

While you are in the Orlando area, take the kids to Sea World. They will love it! You could just about spend the whole day there. Watch the times of the shows and you can get more of them in.

Thank you for your ideas. I would like a luxury resort on the beach for a few days after Disney. I'll have a look at those two.
