$ Question about getting to Newark Airport from NYC

Can anyone tell me the approximate price for a taxi to Newark Airport from the upper East 90's in New York City? Is it a set price to the airport? Also, we will be needing a taxi at about 5 a.m. Will we have trouble finding a taxi that would be willing to go to the airport at that time? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Since Newark airport is actually in New Jersey, NYC yellow cabs may not pick up fares at that airport. Your best bet, especially at that hour is to arrange for a car service to meet you at the airport. They all come in at about the same price, give or take a dollar or two, somewhere around $45 - $50. Carmel is probably the biggest and best known - 212-666-6666.

If you want to take a taxi to the airport, you won't have a problem finding a cab that early in the am, and I wouln't think the driver would have a problem going to Newark, and I would think the price is going to be somewhere around $60 with tax, toll and tip. (The driver has to pay the toll on the way back)

There are several good car services in the city, if you google "car service" in NYC, you will get several suggestions. Most even have websites so you can arrange for the car online and know exactly what the cost will be, as it is a set price to the aiport, $50-$75 depending on what kind of car you would like.

Hope this helps.

Bgans, are you saying that if a NYC cab takes you to Newark they can't bring a fare back? Somehow that doesn't seem to hold water.

GoTravel Jul 25th, 2006 05:05 AM

I think that is correct Gretchen. NYC cabs can't pick up fares in New Jersey but they can take a NYC fare to New Jersey.

Agree to call a car service.

It is absolutely correct. NYC cabs can not pick up fares at Newark. That's why when you take an NYC cab to Newark you have to pay meter, plus roundtrip tolls, plus $15. A car service (Carmel or Dial 7) is actually cheaper than a cab, and much more comfortable.

Gretchen -

NYC cabs are not licensed in New Jersey and can;t pick up anyone there - not just at Newaark airport. That's why any cab fares outside of New York City always include double the amount charged to the meter from the time ou leave city limits.

(And New Jersey cabs can;t pick up in NYC. This is very common throught the country in places where an airport is in a different state from much of the area it serves - for instance the Cincy airport is in Kentucky. When you land there you get only Kentucky cabs - even if you are going to Ohio. If you take a cab from Cincy to the airport it CANNOT pick up passengers there for a return trip.)

Don't take a cab to EWR. Reserve a car. I like Dial 7 the best; it's the same price as Carmel but, in my opinion, a bit more reliable with "nicer" drivers.

And slightly nicer cars, too.

I agree, and I almost always pay the extra $5 for the "luxury sedan."

(The drivers tend to be more civil in the "luxury" cars as well.)
