Question About Footwear in NYC in Dec.
I'm visiting NYC from CA in December and do not own boots. Well, I have play boots for the snow in Tahoe. Without sounding silly, do I need boots for walking the streets in December? Are the sidewalks kept clear of snow? I've already invested in a long wool coat, hat, scarf and gloves but don't know what to do for footwear. Suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

More often than not, we have no snow in December. If it should chance to snow, it will probably melt within a day or so. With this in mind, just bring sturdy walking shoes/hiking boots/sneaks. It is often so warm that you will be really toasty in that long wool coat, but you will look nice.

Steph - I'm a frequent visitor to NYC and the only pair of boots I bring are dressy - with heels. All you should need is a good pair of black walking shoes. Also a plus if they are water-proof. I also invested in a good long wool coat - and take it with me every visit. In sum - don't worry about boots. Have a great time!!!!

Thanks....from me and my feet!

I live in NYC and I don't even OWN boots (just the fashion kind, not snow boots. The streets are usually dry.

There is always chance of snow in December but it usually doesn't last long on the ground. Even when there is a heavy snow the streets in midtown are cleared rapidly and there is no need for boots.
I wear a pair of walking shoes almost every day of the year and don't own a pair of boots.

Everytime I've been to NYC in December it's been pretty cold. I've been sooo glad to have a nice coat, especially those times it seems impossible to hail a taxi. And twice it has snowed in December when I was there, albeit lightly. I usually just wear comfy dark-colored walking shoes and hope I don't have to walk through too much slush.

The down side of taking a coat is that you have to carry it around with you inside stores and restaurants unless the coat check process is quick and painless where you're going, which has not usually been the case for me.

Have a great time - I always do!

New York is a walking city so bring shoes or smeakers that are already broken in and comfortable. If you plan to be mainly in Manhattan you don't need boots. The only puddles that accumulate are on the curbs at the streetcorners so if it snows be careful when you cross the street. If you are paranoid about getting wet, get some waterproof shoes or short duck boots from LLBean.
New York City is a great place to shop. Whatever you need for snow/cold weather can be purchased!

I live in Manhattan. If it REALLY snows, you need your boots if you're going to be walking around, and it doesn't matter what they look like, people/women don't bother much with making their feet look dressed up outside, if they are going to be indoors wanting to look nice they carry their shoes in their totebag or backpack.
But usually you don't need boots even if it does snow a little. I advise shoes with thick rubbber soles, for snow or just for walking around. And you may know this, you can buy a spray in shoe repair shops that will waterproof whatever shoes you wear. I find it helps protect shoes from the chemicals that are put into the snow, which stain shoes.

I have live in NYC for the better part of 15 years. I don't remember too many snows at all in December. Sneakers will get you by if you hit bad weather, hiking boots would do you better or even some kind of rain boots. Don't understand the more often than not we have snow. I wish we had that kind of snow in December I would be heading for the slopes. I bought my first pair of snow boots this winter and only for weekends in Vermont.

Virginia, Does that coating that you speak of take away any shine in the leather? I love nice Italian shoes, would you spray them also?

There are obviously tons of stores in NY--if it snows, just buy a pair! Taxi over to Harrys shoes, tiptop shoes, macys, bloomingdales, etc.
