Question about bear viewing platform, Katmai...

I know this is an odd question, but I was just wondering if there are time limits to the platforms at Brooks Falls in Katmai NP? Does each visitor get a time limit or is it "first come first served" so to speak. Also, is it accessible at all times during the day or do they close it to visitors at certain times. Thanks in advance for any info. I am hoping to visit next July.

I would inquire directly from the operator. But here is the web site. http://www.nps.gov/katm/pphtml/basics.html

We were at Brooks Falls last year. There is a time limit at just the platform right at the Falls.I can't remember the time limit however. We were lucky and got there when there wasn't so many people. They only use it when it is crowded. There isn't a time limit at the other two.

There are Rangers on lookout for the Bears. When they are spotted they might stop you from leaving or going to a platform or area until the Bear passes to a safe distance.

We stayed at the lodge a night,so we were able to go before and after the people on the day trips left.I think that you might not be able to go to the platforms after dark however.

We saw Bears not long after getting off the Plane. You will love it.It is well worth the time, money, and affort to get there.

Dottie, Thanks for the great info! I can't wait to get there! Did you take a package deal over there? If so, do you recommend anyone?

Hi Again,
Yes, we did get a package though the Brooks lodge web site. The thing with them is that you need to book in Jan. the year before you want to go,to be sure of getting a spot at the lodge.Although it would be worth a shot to contact them if you were interested.

The cabins are very, and I mean very basic. The advantage is the added Bear viewing time, with out the crowds. Also the bears came right into and by the camp quite a lot.The Mothers with cubs liked it close to the lodge because it was away from the big males.I was told the males will kill the cubs if they can.

I found the web site for Brooks Lodge. You can get pricing from here. They do also have one day fly in/out trips from Anchorage also.Which might be worth looking at if you can't stay at the lodge it self.
