I left NYC (Upper East Side) in 1976, moved to Denver for two years, then went back to NY. Lasted there two years, then couldn't take it anymore - the crowds, the dirty streets, the noise, the subways. So I left and went to Houston. Only lasted five weeks there - and moved to AZ. Lived in Phoenix till 12 years ago when I moved to Cave Creek. I love it here.
I missed NY at first, now not at all. I haven't been back in about 8 years. I can't see myself ever living there again.
I don't compare where I live to New York. Cave Creek AZ is my frame of reference now - not NY.

Comments like those from Gekko are another reason I was happy to leave NY. As difficult as it is for NYers to believe, there is culture, art, intelligence, educated people, and history in many other places. That attitude that everything else was third-rate, even if they had never lived anyplace else got tedious. A little too defensive for me - maybe that is why NYers are not very friendly.

Gracious, Gail, when DH and visited NYC, with great regularity people, seeing our guidebook, stopped to ask if we needed any help.
There are unfriendlies everywhere-NYC can't claim them all.
And, like it or not, "world class" is not a moniker earned by many places without a large, or very intense universe to pick from.

After living in NYC for 30 years, I moved to Seattle--my home town.
My favorite things about Seattle are living in a beautiful residential neighborhood which is a 1 1/2 mile walk from downtown and being able to drive on country roads within a half hour of my home.
What I miss most about NYC are my friends who live there and richer cultural life--theater, music, museums, etc.
