Quaint Adirondack
Along our summer drive tour, we will be staying two days and two nights in the Adirondack area. I would like to stay in a cabin or B&B with kayak/canoe rental near by. We won't have camping equipment and are looking to spend no more than $150/night. So far almost everything I see is for weekly rentals as we will be there in July. The third day we will have to be in Warrensburg by 8:45 for whitewater rafting, so we would like to be no more than an hour from here.

You can try the Irondequoit Inn in Piseco. It is quite a decent place, but a bit uneven sometimes. Definitely authentic/quaint Adirondacks -- for better or worse -- haha.
The property it is on is lovely, and the lake affords nice kayaking or even better it is super easy to get from there to the very nice Fall Stream (you just paddle around the corner, carry over a very short, easy stretch of the road and maybe cross a couple of beaver dams - or sometimes the dams aren't there). Google "Fall Stream" kayaking. They rent kayaks. Is your white water trip on the Hudson? I didn't know they went out of Warrensburg. |
You might already know this, but the Merrill Magee House B&B is in Warrensburg is very nice. It's not on any water though - it's sort of in town. I've only eaten dinner there and it's been awhile, but it was very nice.

^ Geez, I just looked at the Tripadvisor reviews on Merrill Magee and they are NOT good. Oh well.
It's really hard to find a decent place in the Adirondacks these days. (Outside of Lake Placid.) Really hard. |
The Inrondequoit Inn looks great and what we are looking for. However, we were hoping to raft on Wednesday but it appears the Hudson is only available on Tues and Thurs?? Since we are spending Sunday in Montreal, I think we will now have Monday AM to leave Montreal to get to the Adirondack "hotel" do maybe a hike or two then get up early Tuesday to raft. This would leave Wed and Thurs in the Fingerlakes.... So I guess what I'm saying is I will need something similar to the Inrondequoit Inn but closer to Montreal so I can split the drive and spend more time on Monday afternoon actually enjoying the Adirondacks. Does that make sense at all?
|
Yes, that makes sense...but personally I'd spend more time in the Adirondacks and less in the Fingerlakes. What are you hoping to do in the Fingerlakes?
|
Maybe go to Tripadvisor and look at accommodations in Keene or Keene Valley -- good hiking areas, but maybe not so good for kayaking (high peaks region).
|
Our flight home to Orlando is Friday afternoon from Buffalo. The fingerlakes are a good stopping point on the way there. Maybe I need to research the whitewater rafting again. If only it ran on Wednesdays... I'll go look into the Keene Valley region.

Chris - What about doing a different company? My husband and sons went with North Creek Rafting Company. They also do a killer trip on the Boreas River. I've never rafted, but I've bird watched along the Boreas and it is amazing. They also do the Hudson of course.
http://www.northcreekrafting.com/index.php Finding a nightly rental around there might be tough though. We often stay at Morningside Camps in Minerva and it is great - but alwyas booked solid (and weekly). North Creek had a wonderful hotel that is now closed. They also had a pitiful motel that is now remodeled and apparently quite fancy (The Alpine). Neither is on water or anything, they are just in town. We stay in Piseco a lot so I'm more familiar with that area. There is some very nice flat water kayaking in that area. I'm not too familiar with anything livelier, LOL. The outfitter closest to Irondequoit Inn is probably Beaver Brook in Wevertown. I don't know how their rafting trips are, but I believe their fishing guides are very good. http://www.beaverbrook.net/rafting.html |
Okay so I have chosen Garnet Hill Lodge. It is extremely close to rafting companies (even offer a special raft and stay deal!) and looks like it has hiking and canoeing and a variety of other activities. TripAdvisor has a mix of reviews but mostly good. Check it out: www.garnet-hill.com
Anyone else stayed there? Thank you for the other ideas! By looking through the recommended sites and the links on them I came across this hotel. |
It's been years, but we've stayed there. It's fine - not fancy, but certainly adequate. The main lodge rooms could be sort of noisy, depending on who is staying there - they have just regular, interior doors (not sound proof like a new, concrete block Hampton Innn or something) - so maybe ask for a quiet area.
It's pretty far uphill from the lake (13th Lake I believe), but the lake is completely state owned and has no cottages on it (although there are some near by it). There's a very good restaurant in a nearby town called Olmstedville, The Owl at Twilight. It's a very small place, reservations suggested. Google it for more info, I couldn't find a web site - not too surprising for the Adriondacks. LOL North Creek also has a few restaurants, although I understand a lot of stuff has closed there recently. I can't picture that the town of North River has any services at all. I think you'll have fun! |
Great! I'll check out the restaurant.
We are confirmed for a "suite" in the Tea House. I was told these rooms are larger, newer and with TVs in room. We will have to walk to the lodge for the included breakfast. All three daily meals are typically included, however we are paying for the rafting package rate which is $58pp per night with just breakfast. We will be rafting the next day with NorthCreek Rafting on the Hudson Gorge; they have been very nice. FYI: this was booked separately. Thanks again "wliwl" for your help with this leg of our trip! Now on to the many other parts. Oh how I love planning vacations! |
Have a great trip. I love the Adirondacks. If I close my eyes and I can imagine the smell of the woods...Mmmmm.
