Purchasing liquor in New Mexico on a Sunday?
 

Is it possible to purchase beer, wine and spirits in New Mexico on a Sunday? In a grocery store or in a liquor store?

I googled a lot, but, coming from a country where you can buy liquor anywhere anytime, I simply do not understand the regulations.

We will be flying into Albuquerque and driving to Santa Fe.

It is legal to purchase alochol on Sundays...and you can find it at the grocery store.

Be prepared to be asked for some ID though! My husband (who is 60) had to show his ID a few times when he bought beer and wine in May.

You can but you have to wait until noon. Grocery, market or liquor store. No alcohol sales until noon.
Even if you order a mimosa in a restaurant, it's not available until noon.

Yes, you can. There is a Trader Joe's on St. Francis at Cordova which has a great selection of beers, wines, etc. at good prices.

Any tips for a really good tequila?

(Here in Germany, we drink Esperanto which is pretty good, but you have a better selection in New Mexico.)

Any other tips what's currently hot in Santa Fe? We will arrive a week tomorrow.

Patron is a really great tequila if you are drinking it straight.

Gruet has their tasting room on I-25 between...Paseo del Norte and Alameda, I think. It's on the way out of town, anyway. I'm partial to their blanc de noirs, but you can sample and see what you like.

Just please be very careful not to drink and drive!

If you don't have time to stop at Gruet, Trader Joe's and pretty much any grocery or liquor store carries their stuff.

As far as I remember, it is the Blanc de Noirs which is sparkling? And, in my memory, it is very good. I hardly had a Californian sparkling wine which was equally good (albeit more expensive). And here at home, I drink nothing but French champagne.

I never drink and drive. That's why we rented a home in downtown Santa Fe. We will be sitting in front of our kiva fireplace and enjoying New Mexican wines. And on Christmas Eve we will be walking along Canyon Road (we have done this before a couple of years ago).

Gruet sells a variety of sparkling wines ranging from dry to sort of sweet. The blanc de noirs is a mix of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, and is sort of a pale salmon color. It's dry, which I like. They also make a blanc de blanc, which is all Chardonnay, and a brut rose which is supposed to be really good.

Did you know that we have learnt a lot from your post of 07/13/2008 on Oxford?

On our summer trip to England, we indeed followed your advice and walked on Tolkien's tracks in Oxford. We especially liked your information about the Tolkiens' grave which we visited. It was very touching to see all the little memorabilia which were left there by visitors.

BTW, we didn't like Blenheim either.

I don't drink a lot of tequila (I prefer rum), but if you see Don Julio, it's very good and pretty widely available. For mixing, the Margaritaville Coconut tequila is good. The unflavored is not good- it's about average for the price, but there's nothing worse to me than cheap tequila.
