Pup Takes A Trip
 

As some may have heard, Pup, the Yankee and I are heading South next week. I have gotten some of The BEST information and advice from this forum, about taking a pup on a long drive. I cannot thank you enough!
Here is what I learned, For Your Information, when YOU decide to chuck it all and run away from home, with your Pup. ( or pussycat)

Some motels/hotels say that they accept pets with a deposit.
When you call, it becomes a Non refundable Deposit ( which in my mind is really a Fee..otherwise they would give it back when you leave.) These fees run from $25-$100.
They will also put you in a smoking room if you have a pet.
They will tell you that you can bring a pet but it must be less than a certain size, something that perhaps might fit in your shirt pocket, purse, teacup.
All of the Above, discount Pup and his family.
After nights of burning eyes, cricks in the neck and stiff fingers, typing away trying to find someone that will welcome a well groomed pup and his Mama who isn't that badly groomed either! I have found this ...
this part of the trip is for NC..half way point~


La Quinta Inns- no fee/deposit..dog can be any size.
Comfort Inn- $25-fee...dog can be big.

So far that is it.
Of course, there might be hotels that I have missed, but the requirements were for hotels on the highway, so we would not be lost in the hinterlands at night with two tired people and one hungry pup...(possible makings of a tv movie)

La Qunitas are great about animals! We have stayed at them several times with ours (and aren't given the smelly, rundown rooms either!) The first time we stayed at a La Quinta with our hound, I asked where he could go and the reply was "everywhere" (we didn't take him down to breakfast with us, however!) We really got some looks in the elevator!

My computer cut me off before I could wish you a safe trip. Travel mercies to you and your family!

If you ever take a trip north, well in Kennebunkport Maine there's the Yachtsman and in Gloucester the Atlantic Inn! Happy trails!!!!

Good luck Scarlett. Pup is lucky to have a companion who takes such good care of him.

MzPossum, we had to book a Comfort Inn in NC for the half way point, La Quinta is too far off of I-95 but we will stay at the LQ when in Florida.

Hey Pup, if you can get the human to swing it Westin's allow animals and even have room service for them! Bow Wow baby!!! That's service. Have fun and get some wind in your face for me!

goingforaride is my favorite thing. my mama lets me ride with my head out the window when we are not going too fast.but daddy is driving and he drives too fast. mama will be looking up westin right now.mama likes room service.thank you.pup

No Westins in NC or Florida allow pets, so we will have to "rough" it :) at the Comfort Inn..La Quinta in Jax.
That Pup! he sees me online all the time and thinks he is a person!

Hey Pup, I am the owner of an 18 y/o blind Westie, since cataracts took his vision he has not been boarded. he gets to go!! He has been to Mexico, Canada (thrice)and 37 states. Most hotels are allowing of him and even those that say NO PETS have made an exception. Days Inn has a hotel guide that is especially for the pet traveler. Since pup has never used a leash, can't go while tethered, he is watched closely and baggies for poop scooping are handy. We always carry a couple of gallons of water from home, his own bowls and the foods he normally eats, and his bed so he has the smells of home. No carrier for me either. I travel on the floor of a big van!!!

Pup, Miss Perdy said to tell your parents that she has a van, and she's rather happy staying in it, protecting it, when Mom and Dad and her brother have holed up in a hotel that has somehow forgotten that dogs are people, too. She actually spends quite a bit of time in it running errands at home.

After all, it's a dogs life.

Just one bit of caution that I have heard for anyone who takes there pets on trips or lives in a multi-area code zone: not only put your home & mobile numbers (pager if possible as well) on their tags, INCLUDE YOUR AREA CODE. If your pet gets away from you especially when you are on a trip you can be contacted easily & immediately after the pet is found. I know this is common sense but I have found pets that only have the 7 digit #.

Pup has a special chip in him. He can be located anywhere if he wanders off, but happily, Pup stays close to us. He has also been trained well, a must with a large dog.
But don't tell him I called him the 'D' word!

If Pup is ever in Philadelphia, I understand the Loews on Market St. will provide a warm welcome, water and food bowls, and a pup-sized bed.

If only I had known!! We were in Philadelphia this past spring and I would have brought him with me! We stayed on Market too.
Although, just like children, sometimes it is nice to have a sitter and not have to think about feeding etc :)

Pup-I am envious that you get to travel with your humans. The only place I get to go is back to canine college for a refresher course when I use Mom's pradas for a chew toy. Can't help myself they taste so darn good! Anyway, have fun traveling and don't hang your head out the window it could blow your ear drums outs.

Okay, so here is a challenge--what do you do with a 17 year old, 6" tall, partially bald parrot? I tried to take her to Mystic with me. Called Marriott Residence and they said 'no problem'. I got there and found out there is a $75 fee that they 'forgot' to mention. They also 'forgot' to mention that there is an 11 night minimum for pets. I am not proud of myself but was not going to drive back to NYC at that point. Threw a slightly loud hissy fit in the lobby and they caved. But a bad situation all around. Anybody know of any bird friendly hotels in the tri-state area?
