Puerto Vallarta- flights- so EXPENSIVE
Why are flights from the US so damn expensive to Puerto Vallarta
In the past, it was easy to fly American thru DFW or Continental thru BUSH for about $400 R/T Now we are looking at $700 + with less availability This is for April '07 Any suggestions? Flying out of Philadelphia [email protected] |
Cost of fuel and you are flying from the northeast coast of the US to the southwest coast of Mexico.
It has got to be a 4,000 mile trip! Can you imagine the cost of jet fuel for that? |
Easter break? oops I mean Spring Break?
|
That's a long trip and you are going during peak season? Fares are always pretty high from where I live to PV (east coast, so about like Philadelphia, probably), I'm surprised you previously found it easy to get it for $400. I've seen fares around $600 a year or two ago to PV from where I live (Wash DC) in the fall and winter, but it's never been easy to get it for $400 for me. I've only been checking the last few years or so, though. This fall I was checking and they were around $800 for me.
Is Philadelphia a hub for any cheap airline whatsoever? If not, maybe that's all you can do. If it is, you can try getting a real cheap flight to some place within Mexico or Florida, and then maybe a cheaper internal flight to/from PVR. Like USA3000, Southwest, Jet Blue, one of those. I guess you could try to get some cheap flight to LA or something, and then one to PVR, but I kind of doubt you'll end up much ahead to make it worthwhile, but you can try. They often have a lot cheaper offbrand flights to/from Mexico from California. Or try some of those charter things if you want to deal with the hassles (Apple vacations, etc.). Air Transat in Canada has cheap charter flights from Toronto to/from PVR. That could be a possibility for you. http://www.airtransat.com |
USA 3000 for some reason, just stopped flying to PVR out of PHL
I understand the increase in jet fuel, but $700+ is ridiculous. |
You really think $700 for a flight from Pennsylvania to to the Pacific coast of Mexico is ridiculous?
Honestly? I paid $900 for a coach flight to the BVIs this summer from Charleston which is much closer. |
I can't tell you why but flights to Vallarta have gotten very expensive (I'm in Seattle). I had better luck this year using US Air/American West, instead of Alaska which I usually fly.
Also I have started vacationing in Waikiki instead because I got such killer deals on plane fares & non-stop flights (which I can't get any more either to PV). |
Maybe it has something to do with supply and demand--Antoine Augustin Cournot
On the other hand, prices may drop as the day of your departure draws neigh. You have to ask yourself, "Do I feel lucky?" |
prices from LA to PV have doubled. Used to be around $225 for a ticket, now it's more like $400, and we're only a 3 hr. trip away...
|
Ditto Seattle. For over a decade has been around $375-500 tops. Now Alaska consistently gets ~$725+. And $575 on US Air was the very cheapest I could come up with this year. As reference Seattle is approx. 5 hours flight time, one transfer.

it is too bad. I can usually find a flight to Cancun now for no more than PV, and that's another 2 hours farther from LA...
