Pueblo to visit?
 

Hello,

I just discoverd that Taos Pueblo will be closed the two days we will be in Taos at the end of August. Is there any other Pueblo like this that would be good to visit? It could be anywhere in the ABQ to Taos range. I did a quick search and a lot of them seemed to be closed to the public...

Also, I wasn't sure how the roads ran by the Taos Pueblo...is it still possible to at least to a "drive by"?

Sorry to hear the pueblo will be closed during your visit. Hopefully, you can visit it on another trip - it's definitely worth it. As for driving by, I don't think it will be possible, although I would certainly try. The pueblo itself is at the very end of a road, and past where you would normally park. It will probably depend on how 'closed' the pueblo is. If the restaurant and the entire pueblo land is closed, then you wouldn't be able to see anything at all.

My second choice would be the Acoma Pueblo - about 45-60 minutes west of ABQ off 1-40. It's set on a really high mesa so the views are amazing.

One other place that's really nice is the waterfalls by Nambe Pueblo, northwest of Santa Fe on the way to Chimayo. I never went to the pueblo itself, but the falls are worth the climb up to see them. Good place for a picnic lunch too.

Acoma Pueblo("Sky City") is a good one to visit, west of Albuquerque.What can be a whole day : ABQ/Acoma-visit of Acoma/El Morro-visit of El Morro with the summit trail or not depend if you are or not hikers...
Then if you have times, or Zuni Pueblo and back to ABQ or El Malpais(the Ventana Arch).

If you are near Santa Fe, the visit of Puye Cliff dwellings is nice and the whole day can associate Puye Cliff dwelling/Bandelier Nat'l Pk and a pueblo like Santa Clara.

Finally, you can also go to the NM website and find the days of the indian pueblo feasts, often open to the public. It worth the visit and generally there is a sympathic indian market during those days.
Those days there are some dances(corn dance, ...).

Just a note though, since the pueblos are all privately run, they can close at any time for any reason. It's always best to call before visiting if you can.

During those feasts, no films, no pictures, no sketching.
At the indian pueblo cultural center in Albuquerque, there are some dance demonstartions with authorization of pictures, not film.

Just a note...you MUST take a tour to see Acoma Pueblo. You cannot just park and go in on your own like at Taos and others. They take you via bus and if you are going to visit, be sure to do it earlier rather than later during the day. If you get there too late, they simply will not have a bus to take you up. So even if it says they are open to 4 or 5 pm...you have to be there a couple of hours earlier than closing to get on the bus, have the tour and then head back to parking lot.

Here is what is posted on the Taospueblo.com site:

Taos Pueblo will be tentatively closed from August 23 to August 31, 2006 for religious activities. We will re-open September 1, 2006.

I hadn't been to the site in a few weeks until last week....kind of changed all my plans!

the Minneapolis Sunday paper has a feature on the Acoma Pueblo in the travel section today and it looks like a great stop. I don't know if you can access the article online, but the paper is the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Does anyone know of hotels/motels/ to stay in this area aside from the casino?

I am pretty sure the only place to stay near Acoma is casino related. Albuquerque is not that far away and offers far more in the way of choices.

I read that the Acoma Pueblo is closed the first or second weekend in October. Does anyone know anything about this? Could I go during the week? Do you know which weekend or why? Thanks!

I called them and they were very nice and told me that they close the first or second weekend in October for cultural reasons and that they won't know which weekend until after Labor Day. So, I can call back then to find out more.
