Publick House in Sturbridge?

Has anyone stayed in the Publick House Historic Inn or any of the other buldings? I am interested in people's opinions of this lodging in Sturbridge. Was it clean, comfortable, worth the price? Is the surrounding area nice, or is it in the middle of tourist traps?

Also, has anyone dined there recently? I see from old posts that it may be going downhill????

Thanks for your help!

If this is the place I'm thinking of, then I'd say it's a bit of a tourist trap. It's on a major highway. I didn't stay there, but did have lunch. It was ok - but nothing special.

hellow,
The Public House is an old inn in south central Massachusetts. I've never stayed, only dined, so take my comments in that vein.
It is an historic, very clean property in an area of intense lodging and dining competition. For atmosphere it can't be beat, especially dining in the tap room, a part of the original structure.

On a food quality for dollar basis, it is not the best value, but the food is very nice and the ambiance is intimate.

As for tourist traps, Sturbridge is relatively expensive, and plays to it's association with Old Sturbridge Village, a working historically accurate repproduction of a New England Village in the 1820's. But it is by no means tacky.

When are you planning on visiting?

Thanks for the replies. We plan to stay there the weekend of June 21 (probably just one night). I would like to stay in a New England Inn, but also will have 3 teen girls with me, so I wanted to stick with something historic rather than "romantic". AAA rates it a 2 star, and it looks like the motel part of the complex is pretty basic, but the Historic Inn looks very nice. I was hoping to get some first-hand reviews from fellow fodorites who have stayed there recently?????

We haven't stayed there, but have often stopped on road trips for lunch or dinner. The "setting" is fabulous. Out of the way a bit in a wooded area. (It's convenient to Old Sturbridge Village, but not along "motel, highway exit, strip".) I would not describe it as "historic". I'm a AAA member and have, over the years, determined to stick with three diamonds or more. So, I can't imagine anyone thinking those ridiculous rates are prudent with only two diamonds.

As for the food, it's reasonably good for what we consider to be overpriced. And, don't expect friendly or efficient service.

For really terrific food at moderate prices, go to the Sturbridge Bistro. We haven't bothered with the Publik House since discovering it.
