Public transporation from Manhattan, New York to Chester, New Jersey

I've heard Chester is a cute town to visit with lots of antique shops. Has anyone gone? Please describe it a bit. Also any nearby towns worth visiting?

Although I'd like direct public transportation to Chester from NYC, I wouldn't mind stopping at a nearby town and cabbing it to Chester.

Many thanks for your suggestions.

Well, I must admit that I've never heard of Chester NJ - although I do know of Chester PA. But I looked on the map and - thre it is. Unfortunately it doesn;t have any public transit. If you look at NJ Transit (which includes both train and bus) it provides a number of places which are 5 to 10 mikes from Chester - and I would guess you would need a cab from there).

I'm not at all familiar with that part of Jersey - but it's nowhere near Manhattan. You can certainly look at the NJT options - but you might be better off renting a car - esp if you want to visit a number of places and might be bringing any purchases back to the city.

Last I went, about 8 years ago, Chester was a cute town. There was a main drag with shops and restaurants and farms at either end, as I recall. I don't know or recall the antique shops, just not an interest of mine. I'm sure it's still a great town but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the locally owned unique shops have become nationwide chains of some sort. Not sure about the farms, but there are less farms everywhere, it seems. I'm no longer in touch with the people I knew out there but I think most people commuted to NYC via Morristown or Dover. There are lots of nice towns out there, but I don't know about their 'downtown' areas. Morristown is a good size town and has beautiful homes and churches right off the main drag that are nice to see.
