PSST! SECRETS ABOUT MRS. WILKES IN SAVANNAH

Earlier postings re: visits to Savannah have contained erroneous and/or incomplete information about Mrs. Wilke's Boarding House, the hugely popular family-style home cooking restaurant.

1. Take-out is available if you go around back to the alley and the back kitchen door.
2. They serve breakfast.

Newsboy, they discontinued breakfast a couple of years ago. Do you have new info that they've started serving it again?

ALAS! I do not ... pity. It was truly a Southern bfast feast! I hope they still do takeout from the "rear" or else I'm useless!

According to their website, they serve Lunch M-F- still cash only.

I don't think so - but I don't know so.

I WAS sure about the breakfast because I loved them. They stopped serving breakfast after she died. I've never heard about the take out from the alley.

Some residents, especially business people downtown used to do that simply because they could not wait in line the amount of time they had for lunch, but did they do it for the general public?

Besides...part of the fun of Mrs Wilkes is the entire experience: the dining room, the family style dining, meeting the others eating at your table, tourists and locals alike, and enjoying their reaction to it all, all the bowls passed (and the seconds if you can), even taking your dishes to the kitchen. It's not just the food, but the entire parcel that makes Mrs Wilkes what it is.

When Paula opened her first Lady and Sons, the locals would walk past the lines outside to get their lunch to go. Now you can call and place an order and pick it up at the gift shop. I don't think they advertise that or have an "official" to-go set-up, but I do it almost every time I'm in Savannah.

It sounds like OO's description is what Mrs. Wilkes did for the same reasons.
