Provincetown and Cape Cod

We're looking at taking the ferry from Boston to Provincetown in late August, staying a couple of days and returning by ferry. If we want to see some of Cape Cod beyond Provincetown, will we need to rent a car or is there public (or private) transport that we can use for a bit of touring?

There is a bus service called FLEX that goes from Provincetown. It will get you to other towns but it is somewhat limiting to explore the Cape without a rental car.

But it all depends what you want to see. Getting to the beaches, unless you're in Provincetown generally requires a car but if you want to explore a town center, go to some galleries, and perhaps walk down to the harbor, you can take the bus to Wellfleet. Chatham is another town center that is a pleasant place to walk around.

A car will definitely give you flexibility even if you rent one only for a day. If you rent for more than a day, check where you are staying in P-town to see if they have parking.

Would you consider renting a car in Boston for your few days?
