Providence Good Local Italian Food?
 

What's the best italian restaurant in Providence that I can take my family tonight after picking up someone at TF Green airport. Where do the locals like to get a good italian dinner?

Okay, even an all around good family place would do...thanks fodors

Last year we went to lunch at Cafe Christine - 145 Spruce Street - byob - There were six of us - all ordered something different and loved everything -- not fancy --- but real nice...

Camille's has always been great.

Cassarino's on federal hill. Others are more expensive and perhaps have better food but for us blue collar guys Cassarino's is the best. It's very traditional waiters with black trousers, white shirts and black ties. They only recently added women to the wait staff (very traditional) used to be men only. The food is great Lasagna, Steak ala Mama, Veal Parmesan. The Antipasto is superb. I have been told Al Forno is the foody's choice but I still like Cassarino's. After dinner take a walk around and enjoy the atmosphere, cafes, bakeries and Italian deli's. Try Venda ravioli or one of the bakeries for a little something to take home. Also check the "Waterfire" schedule, if it's on that night the town will be jumping...lots of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Might be worth a look. They put wood in steel braziers attached to the river floor and light it. Very impressive! They also have street musicians, puppets and vendors. Quite the thing!

Most of Providence's worthy Italian spots are on Federal Hill, on or close by Atwells Avenue. Definitely can recommend Costantino's Venda Ravioli, though they're really more a store than a sit-down place. Some sit-down spots here where I've had good experiences include Pane e Vino, Mediterraneo (a little more contemporary feel), and Angelo's Civita Farnese (really old-fashioned style and informal). And Pastiche does very nice desserts, including Italian style ones.

Outside of this area, agreed that Al Forno is good as well, especially for upscale pizza.
