Protecting Your Memories
If my house were to burn down, God forbid, the fire could have all the nice material things I have been blessed with but NOT my travel photos, photos of my friends & family, and the videos of my children through the years. I would be devasted! These are such treasures to me that I asked and received a fire-proof safe for Christmas one year to store them in. Of course, there are some around the house so we can enjoy them. Does anyone else do this? |
I keep all our home videos in a fire proof safe. I have also taken all the pictures out of our photo albums, scanned them into the computer, and copied them onto CDs. These are kept in the safe also. The photo album project took about a year, but the CDs will last longer (some older photos were already starting to disintegrate) and it is much easier to save a few CDs through future generations than several boxes of photo albums.

What a job! I'm impressed! I have 24 albums of family and travel, I cannot imagine taking that job on. Not too long ago, we were told to take cover from a tornado in the area. I took all 24 albums to the basement with us LOL :-) |
instead on investing in a fire proof safe, why not put your photos in a safe deposit box at the bank. I would assumes that the vault at the bank is fire proof.
|
I have a copy of all my digital photos on both my computer at home and on a CD in my office.
|
I keep the photos at home, and the negatives (and now the APS rolls or CD) at my sisters house. If one house burns, we've still got our pictures. You could keep the negatives in a bank deposit box..they aren't that bulky. Just label each set so you can find them easily. I use the index prints they give now as the label.

Before the safe idea, I thought of putting a copy at another house. As for a bank vault, it would be too inconvenient for me when I want to get something out. I wonder if my safe could be ripped open or blown away by a tornado? I do live in a path and we have frequent scares.

I have all of my negatives in fire safe along with important papers.
Being that we live on the coast, we get evacuated every so often for hurricanes and I know exactly what to evacuate from the house along with the cats. |
