Protecting valuables at the beach
 

I have read that theft at Maui beaches is a distinct possibility. How do you secure your hotel room key, car keys, credit cards, etc when you are at the beach, in the water?

Don't take your valuables to the beach. Take a room key that can be replaced and leave the rest of the stuff behind.

That's fine if you are at the beach where you are staying...but what about a beach that you have reached by car? You certainly do not want to leave valuables in a car.

Secure your valuables in your hotel room safe. Take the room key (many hotels now have "key cards"), and if necessary, a small amount of cash and maybe a credit card with you in a small waterproof pouch that fits in your pocket (small ziplock bags work great) or you can purchase a pouch that hangs around your neck at in any good sporting goods store or dive shop.

Remember you are at the beach you - don't need to tote along your entire belongings. If you are staying on resort property all you need is the key.

My husband put his VISA, license, and cash in a baggie in his bathing suit pocket in Isla Mujeres. In the water in a current, he put his hand in his pocket just to be certain it was snugly in the "down position". As he pulled his hand out, the pocket turned inside out and the strong current flowing between rocks in an outgoing tide whisked the whole packet away before anyone could grab it. We were extremely lucky--scuba divers happened to come across it on the ocean floor AND located us before our catamaran left for the mainland again! It was all intact and they refused to take a cent(avo) for their efforts. Lesson learned. The next year we had the pouch!

My husband and I lost our driver's licenses as well as a credit card and some cash that were supposedly zipped into his swimming trunk pocket.

Next time, we'll use one of those neck pouches.

Many of the small waterproof canisters that go around your neck on a cord have a slide on them so you can make the cord too small to go over your head. This way the canister doesn’t float away from around your neck. Check out the variety of waterproof containers, here’s just one source:

Go to snorkelcity.com and order a waterproof snorkeler's fanny pack. I had one of these for Hawaii and it was great. It is a fanny pack that when opened is a ziplock bag inside. It worked well enough for us to snorkel and carry a few must have items.
They also shipped very quickly and I received my fanny pack in a couple of days.
