Proposing marriage on a Times Square billboard

Anyone know if this is possible?

A couple of years ago, the Joe Boxer sign was available to post personal messages. Hundreds used it to propose marriabe. Is there anything similar these days?

This is a little different ~ but you know those little airplanes that tow advertisements along the Jersey Shore beaches all summer...I know you can get a marriage proposal on one of those. I see a proposal at least once each summer.

If it were me, I would not want to be proposed to via billboard whether it was at Times Square, or some sporting event, anywhere. Every time I see that I can only think how tacky it is, not very creative either. Not by airplane's towing banners, either.

Although proclaiming your love for all to see is a nice idea, I agree with jenneepoo.
There are many more romantic, creative and thoughtful ways to go about something that important than what amounts to a commercial advertisement.

Granted it might not be your cup of tea - but you're not me and my girlfriend. All I was doing was inquiring about the feasability - not the the tackiness or otherwise of such a plan.

Now, can anyone help? Is the Joe Boxer site now down?

Laticsmom..I think it is a fun, creative way to do it. I understand you are not asking for opinions, just advice.

Good luck!

BTW,if it were me,I would try a billboard at a ballgame. Try that if you cant get times square.

laticsmon - I apologize for responding without giving pertinent advice, I just wanted to add that I think your idea is great!! Do not let anyone tell you this is a tacky idea. Tacky would be proposing while in bed with someone else. LOL Good luck! I know plenty of women who would be pleased with this.

rwilliams Aug 21st, 2003 09:51 AM

....I'm still trying to visulaize the logistics of "proposing while in bed with someone else".

HOw about trying one of the billboards at at Yankees Game? There are several that are used during the game and at the stretch. They can also give you the exact time the message will appear, and you might get national TV coverage on it, expecially if she says yes. Be fun for all the relatives at home.

Yes there are also a couple of boards in Times Square that will carry the message, like the Ruters board, but not sure how to contact the companies, you might try a search for Times Square and NYC Tourism, and I'll do a bit of checking around for you to see what I can come up with.

What is your time frame for this and when are you planning on being here?

And most importantly congratulations!!

Hi,

Well, I did a little searching and the only info I came up with was this:

"The cost of a billboard rental ranges from 200 dollars a month to 100,000 dollars for Times Square."

But I couldn't figure out who to contact. I'm still looking...

My plan almost 3 years ago was to kidnap my husband, take him to NYC, & let him know we were pregnant by him reading the Joe Boxer sign. See, I rented a video camera & he was just going to think I was filming the sights when really I was going to be able to record his reaction to finding out (he so much wants to be a Daddy). Unfortunately, I miscarried the night before we were to leave so that plan did not work. You may try jbandsandy.com (D.J.'s) and ask JB if he knows how to post something. That's how I found out about it. Good Luck!

Good thing you let him know we "were pregnant by him".

whew!!!! LOL

BrimhamRocks Aug 21st, 2003 01:25 PM

I think she meant she would let him know she was pregnant.....by him reading the sign. diart, I'm sorry for your loss. I've experienced it, myself.

Hope things have been better for you since then!

Good luck, laticsmon, whatever you decide.

You used to be able to do it at the Times Square Visitors Center at 1560 Broadway (between 46 & 47). They may be able to tell you where to do it.

laticsmon Aug 22nd, 2003 01:43 AM

Hey, thanks for the leads (and the congratulations). The time frame is the second week in September - look out for our name in lights. Or two people rowing outside Times Square - "Why do you want to make me look at some stupid billboard?"

Statia Aug 22nd, 2003 05:15 AM

We hope you report back and give us the details of how it went, Laticsmon. And, congrats!

laticsmon Aug 26th, 2003 07:36 AM

Just pushing this back up the board. So far it's loking like this will be an impossibility.

BrimhamRocks Aug 26th, 2003 07:39 AM

EEK! Well here's hoping for you, anyway!

Lmaev Aug 26th, 2003 08:33 AM

This is a great idea!! I do not know about the Joe Boxer sign but maybe try ABC. They have there GMA studios there and I know they sell time/space on the jumbo-tron. (I work in advertising).
Maybe try calling ABC in NY and see what they can do.
