Proposed rail connection LGA to NYC
 

It's about time. JFK has it as does EWR. Much needed.

This will/should never happen as proposed and probably won't. It's actually a horrible idea. It requires you to ride the 7 train (one of our most crowded subways) all the way out almost to Main Street before boarding yet another train, not unlike the connection to the Howard Beach station at JFK, something which was never really a success until we had the Airtrain from Jamaica as a counterpart for people (the vast majority) coming from Manhattan. It's not unlike our old "train to the plane".

I actually like the ferry idea much better. That makes more sense and could be launched sooner.

Given that the NIMBYs (Not In My Backyard) in Astoria have totally opposed extending the N train (elevated structure)from Ditmars Blvd (or a branch off from Astroia Blvd) to LGA, this may be the only viable subway option.


Ferry service sounds good but given some of the severe winters that we sometimes get in NYC (so far this year has been mild but that can change) the ferries can get sidetracked by bad weather (and ice in the East River).

But until something actually does happen, travelers will just have to depend on taxis or the M60 bus (from 125th St in Manhattan or the Q70 from 74th St/Roosevelt Av in Queens)

Time will tell (and make things more expensive to build).

Anyone think the taxi drivers might be opposed to this or does that kind of thing not happen in New York?

Taxi drivers usually prefer more shorter rides - since they can generally get another fare quickly in Manhattan and tips tend to be better.

If they take someone out to LGA they then have to go into the taxi pool to get a passenger going back to the city - a pool which may have a couple of hundred other cabs and wait for a lengthy period to get another passenger,

Last check, LGA is IN New York City. Islip Airport is not.

This type of arrangement should have been done decades ago.

I assume if they built it all of the LIRR Port Washington trains would stop there. That would provide an alternative to the 7 every 30 minutes. Of course they'd need to rebuild the whole complex so you could get from the LIRR to AirTrain a little more quickly and easily.
