Proper dress for Theater
 

I'll be visiting NYC for four days before leaving for Europe for three weeks. Can I wear sneakers and khakis to a evening Broadway show performace without looking like a dweeb? I only have so much luggage space and can't waste it on dress shoes etc. <BR>Thanks!!!

You might stand out a little. I have been to a couple Broadway plays and dress ranges widely. Some people are in full suits and some others are in business casual. You might get a couple of looks wearing sneakers but I doubt you would have any problems.

Just about anything goes these days. You'll see everything from suits, ties and dresses to shorts and sneaks. Personally, I think shorts and sneaks are not the best attire for the theater. But, hey, who am I to set the rules!

Theater dress has certainly become more casual. I went to a show in shorts back in May and i'm glad I did because the theater was extremely stuffy and warm.

I agree that you won't have a problem for feel out of place. I usually dress up for the theatre, but my honey is usually in his khakis and sneakers, so go and have a great time. What are you seeing?

Don't even think twice about it - with sneakers and Khakis you actually be overdressed these days.

I agree that you can wear whatever you want in NY and nobody cares. But if you want to look a little less like a tourist (and maybe funk up your evening just a tad), wear your hiking boots or sandals instead of sneakers, and put on whatever black items you have with you. You'll find this works well in Europe, too, if you want to fit in a little better in the cities. I live in the south, so I'm used to wearing pastels all summer, but when I travel, even where it's going to be hot, I always take a few things in black -- a shirt, a pair of tencel pants, and a pair of black shoes or sandals. Makes me feel a little more sophisticated and, in the evenings, one notch more dressed up than I was during the day. Have a great time!

Thanks for all of the answers and help. We've decided to go for it...we can only pack one bag each for Europe and I'd hate to waste space on clothes...more room for things we buy...thanks again.
