As long as you stick to beginner trails, renting a jeep that has been modified for off-roading could be a lot of fun. (It is not fun getting in and out of them due to their height.) (According to their website, doesn't look like much of a height problem though.) Driving over rocky areas requires some skill and experience According to the website, they have trails mapped for experience level. You don't want to get high-centered if you're out by yourself.

I wouldn't go out by myself, MrCat would do the driving. He's done some off-roading but mostly of the beach variety, which is a different skill set than the rocks, I think. I was figuring we could handle the moderate trails, but he thinks its a bad idea.

after all this, in the end we'll probably end up on the Pink jeep! which certainly won't be a bad option.

Private tours from Red Rock Jeeps are $175/hour. Too much for me!

I really enjoy my Pink Jeep tour because we had a great guide who knew all the names of flora and fauna. We went up Schnebly's (sp) which was mostly a gravel road until we go to a place where we had to climb up and over a rocky outcropping. That was the only place that might have been tricky. Personally, I don't care for serious rock crawling. It seems mostly the driver who enjoys getting his/her skills tested and getting into predicaments that might require winching. The modified rigs in our family have a lot of battle scars. It's fun to meet someone who lives in the area (i.e. the Pink Jeep Guide) but it would also be nice to be on your own schedule. We've recently discovered the joy of just sitting for awhile and enjoying the scenery. Maybe taking a picnic lunch along. Hope you have a great trip.
