Princess Kaiulani

What feedback do you have on the Princess Kaiulani in Waikiki?

I'm cruising out of Honolulu in May and will be there for the weekend. I have stayed at the Prince and Marriott KoOlina. I'm all over the board. Not sure whether to get an inexpensive room like the Princess ($98 on expedia) or splurge on the Halekulani.

In the meantime, I am also bidding for a resort via Priceline. Will see what happens.

I have looked at tripadvisor, but want the opinion of Fodorites. I know I have other options, just curious to hear about experiences with the PK.

Thanks so much.

wow- from $98 to the Halekulani!! that is quite a difference
;-)

sorry while i know quite a few of the Waikiki hotels haven't heard of the one you're asking about.

The Princess Kaiulani is a nice hotel. It is older but the last time I stayed there it was in good repair, clean and friendly staff. The location is excellent - right across from the Sheraton Moana Surfrider. Very central. I usually get a room that does have a bit of ocean view but you are across the street from the ocean. There is a public access to the beach directly across the street. I would certainly stay there again and especially at that price.

We stayed there in 2004. We were upgraded, without requesting it, to an ocean view room and enjoyed our stay in a nice room with a good sized bath. We were in the front above the pool, not in the tower.

There is a snack bar-type restaurant at the front sidewalk. It had wonderful fresh pineapple, and the pool shack also served it free in the afternoons.

It is a very convenient place to stay, as traveller69 said, right across the street from the Moana and at the beginning of the open beach. It's in walking distance of everything on Waikiki.

The PK is in a nice location almost right next to International Market Place. Take the room for $98. There normal rate is about $240.

I saw the same deal on www.bookit.com

They had some blackout dates for the $98.

PK has an excellent Polynesian show, Creation: A Polynesian Journey.

Yeah suze,

I'm literally all over the place. The cheapest I've found for the Halekulani is $405 on their website. I'm really struggling. I also KNOW that I want to stay in Waikiki near the beach.

When reviewing the Halekulani website, they have a sister hotel- - - Waikiki Parc. It seems OK as well.

We fly in on Friday afternoon and will likely do much of nothing. I would like to have a nice dinner somewhere and relax. I doubt that we will do much of anything that evening. So a great hotel would be nice. We will be gone all day Saturday touring the island. However on Sunday, I want to be able to wake up and enjoy a nice breakfast. Preferably at the hotel where we are staying. If that is not an awesome, I would like to finally try Boots and Kimo's (hope I got that right). Sunday would be the best day I believe as we will be driving the island on Saturday and that may be a little off our path.

Anyway, it's my 40th birthday...and I'm struggling with "the you only live once" concept versus "girl pleeeze!"

traveller69 Feb 28th, 2007 09:55 PM

I would definitely take the Princess K. It is so convenient to everything. I watched the Polynesian show from our balcony. If you want a delightful breakfast on Sunday spend the money you saved by not staying at the Halekulani and go to the fabulous (pricey) brunch at the Moana. It has a gorgeous setting - we usually splurge for brunch there every time we go to Honolulu.

girl, pleeze, you only live once so you really need to take advantage of a great, great bargain comes along, like that $98 rate at the PK. I would jump on it. I stayed there in January (booked separately from air, btw). They had a pretty good looking dinner buffet but I chose the Japanese restaurant (ok, but not great). Great location. Even better when I found that there was an Avis place next door.

As others have said PK is a great location. I recently stayed at Moana Surfrider right across the street. Went over to PK to check it out for future reference and thought it was a great value for such a good spot. Unless you have the desire to be right on the beach or to have an ocean view room, the PK has it all, especially for your price. I'd jump on it. For the $ you save over a higher priced room think of the great dinners you can splurge on if you care to.

We stayed there in January and liked it very much. If you book through Expedia, Bookit, etc. be sure to check their cancellation policy. Starwood/Sheraton has the room for $99 and if I'm not mistaken you can cancel almost up to your date of arrival. Maybe even that day. I've read on here somewhere the .coms require more time for a refund. Check the PK web site for prices on their other rooms. We ended up with a partial ocean view and were glad we did. Have a great trip!

I'll throw in my 2 cents...having just spent a night at the brand new Embassy Suites (on Beachwalk). I recommend it highly. Not sure what rates are for non-residents, but the service and ambiance are exemplary. This is an all-suite hotel -- living area has sofa, desk, plasma TV, and its own A/C control. Bedroom has king bed, plasma TV, chair with footrest (ahhhh!), and its own A/C control. Bath has all the necessities, and is large. Oh, and entry hall has wet bar with micro oven and small fridge. All rooms have at least one lanai (my room was corner, so had 3 lanai...wheeee!). Parking garage is on-site, but check price (I was cabbing it, this trip).

Rate includes daily free breakfast buffet (all you can eat, and good assortment of offerings), and evening "meet the manager" open bar and snacks nightly (didn't go, so can't comment).

It's across the street from Halekulani:

Well, after using Starwood points recently...I just realized I have enough left for a free night at PK but not quite enough for Moana Surfrider. So, I will likely take your advice and stay there and hope for the best.

Can't beat a free room and $98 room at the same location for a Friday and Saturday night. Once I book, I will contact the hotel and have them note my reservation with my Starwood number and hope that I can stay in the same room for both nights.

Sounds like a plan.

Interesting update...

I have booked my Saturday night stay with PK using hotel reward points. Since it can be canceled, there is nothing to lose.

While perusing my Entertainment book, I found a $10 off coupon for Hotwire. I've used Priceline, but not Hotwire. Hotwire seems to have a 3* hotel for $99. With the coupon it would be $89. Based on my research, it is likely the PK. I'm not going to take the chance but wanted to share the info if anyone else was interested.
