Priceline or Super 8 in NYC for 3 people?

Looking at Bidding for Travel & Better Bidding there appears to be problems in NYC with rooms for more than 2 people.
I'm coming over from the UK and although I've got a booking for the Super 8( based on reports in this forum! ) for 4 nights at the end of June I'd like to try for something better & cheaper with Priceline.
In MTW the Hilton New York seems to be coming up. What do you think my chances are of getting a room with 2 beds are? If I couldn't get 2 beds do you think I could get a rollaway.
Thanks
PS Can't believe how expensive NYC hotels are!

The chances are good that you will win a room in NYC that will NOT accommodate three people.

Standard hotel rooms in NYC are very small and most only come with one double or queen bed. Between fire codes and room size, you cannot fit a rollaway bed.

Honestly, in the hundreds of times I've been to NYC, I remember getting a room with two beds maybe twice.

Don't chance it.

GoTravel speaks the truth. I wouldn't do priceline in NYC for more than 2 people.

The Priceline bid is for two people only. If you turn up with a third there well might not be room for them - and then they'd have to find another place to stay. Even if there is room for them the hotel will probably not honor the Priceline bid - and will probably want to charge you the triple walk-up rate.

If you want somehwere nicer than the Super 8 (don;t blame you) you'll just need to do a lot of shopping and check the non-blind discounters - but stating up front it's for a triple.

But doubt if you will find anything acceptable that's less than the Super 8 - the question is - how much higher are you willing to go?

(By the way - NYC hotels are considerabley less than those in London based on everything I've seen - dont know why you're surprised.)

Welshgirl,

You can request a rollaway in most hotels to accommodate 3 people. But with the strength of the GBP against the USD, you shouldn't have a problem with rates in NY.

It would be prudent to heed the warning at BFT about booking a hotel room for more than two people in NYC. We've stayed at the Hilton many times with Priceline in a king or queen room (one bed only). There would not have been room for a rollaway.

You could bid for two rooms on Priceline. Note, however, that hotel occupancy is at record highs this year in NYC, so it's important to shop and book early, or book something you can cancel and keep shopping.

You could see if you can get a better deal on hotwire. They allow you to specify 3 people. www.betterbidding.com can help you with using hotwire.

As to budget - NYC hotels are expensive, even if they're not as expensive as London (which may not be where Welshgirl is even coming from). And, even with the strong pound right now, a budget is still a budget and Welshgirl may need to try to save money on the hotel.

Not arguing with the desire to save money - no one wants to throw it out the window - but it seems very naive to expect prices in NYC to be less than London - or similar to prices in a small town anywhere.

2 beds in one room is very rare in NYC. We have gotten king beds several times including the NY Hilton. Our last room there was roomy but I'm not sure if these hotels accomodate rollaways. Priceline is a great deal, the 3rd person makes it a little tougher. Why dont you try bidding 2.5 to 3 star properties and get 2 rooms? I just read biddingfortravel may be down temporarily. You can see historic bidding and prices there. It is a great resource. Enjoy NYC and good luck. By the way, the 4th of July is a quiet time in NYC< last year we got nice rooms for Priceline less than $100. People go out of the city this weekend.

If you don't mind the Murray Hill East Suites, you can get a HUGE apartment for little $$$
See the tripadvisor reviews.
I have stayed here a few times. NOT my favorite, but safe, well located and pretty clean.

Before you book a hotel try the www.hotels.com site. You can input your dates of travel and see what lots of hotel rates are for those dates. It also includes pictures, location and amenities.

Have a GREAT time while you are here.

Thanks for all the great advice.
Don't think I'll be risking one room on Priceline and 2 rooms just pushes it too high for my budget.
Some of the prices I've seen have been okay ( around £120 or $200 ) but then with tax the cost seems to jump dramatically.
Looking at the New York Helmsley now as it appears to have rooms that are a reasonable size and some even have a view!
I've found London hotels to be cheaper than NYC prices but that may be because I know London better and so can judge which areas to stay in.
Keep up the good work - NYC is only the first part of my trip so I'm bound to be back with other questions!
