Pretend you're staying at Fisherman's Wharf...

Two ladies staying one night at Fisherman's Wharf in Feb. What's our best restaurant choice (read best food of any kind) within walking distance to Marriot. Help us make the right choice!

bj,

Scoma's for sure. No reservations, so be prepared to wait. Fun place and good food.

Dick

If you only have one night in San Francisco I'd suggest you take a cab to another part of town for better dining choices. North Beach is a short cab ride away. I'd recommend the Rose Pistola there. Or, in the Marina district there's Plumpjack, Betelnut or the Brazen Head. Don't feel you have to limit yourself. Fisherman's Wharf is the touristy end of the city and mostly populated by subpar restaurants catering to tourists.

Well..I'd agree with taking a cab ride.If you want to go only a short way try "Boulevard". It's right off the Embarcadero. I'd also recommend having the concierge make your reservation which you absolutely will need. Beyond that there are many very good restuarants in the city. Check out your sources for those in the Marina &North Beach. Both will be very short cab rides.

What do you want? Real Gourmet fare? Wonderful views? A taste of San Francisco?

If it's the latter, Scoma's or Alioto's...and get the Cioppino (sp?).

Susan Jan 13th, 2003 12:51 PM

If you can get a reservation--Gary Danko's on Northpoint; seafood (best wharf has to offer, whihc is not to say the best)--McCormick & Kuleto's; small, California cuisine--Zax (Powell & Taylor): vietnamese--Ana Manera (Ãsp?). All in wharf area, if you are committed to wlaking distance.

I also can recommend Scoma's (Cioppino) or go to north beach (walkable in Feb., I've done it many times), I liked the Cioppino at Cafe Michealangelo better than Scoma's although both were good. Now you have me craving Cioppino again, I thought I was over that.

Scomas crab leg pasta

Grasshopper Jan 13th, 2003 03:57 PM

Sorry, I don't get Scomas. It's touristy and way overpriced. Kuletto and McKormicks isn't bad and has nice views and decent service.

Scoma's is not a great reastaurant, but like Anthony's Pier 4 in Boston, it is a defining restaurant.

Sure you can get better food elsewhere, but you can't soak up the atmosphere of the city as well anywhere else...jmho.

Many thanks for all the suggestions. After a busy day the walking option just sounded easiest. Would it make to sense, or is it even possible, to take a ferry late afternoon over to Sausalito, have dinner there and return to FW by ferry?

joebob Jan 14th, 2003 09:00 AM

good luck walking to Boston for Anthony's pier 4, (tourist trap by the way)

Suzie Jan 14th, 2003 09:45 AM

bj you'd probably have to have a pretty early dinner as the ferries don't run very late. Most leave Sausalito by 7:30ish to get back to SF by 8:00. Weekends have earlier schedules. Here's one web site for a schedule:http://www.transitinfo.org/Sched/GF/SAUS/A/
