Prescott or Hotel Monaco in SF?

Does anyone have an opinion, positive or negative, about either the Prescott or the Hotel Monaco? I know I've read on here that the rooms are small at the Monaco, but since my wife and I will be there less than 24 hours and not spending a lot of time in the room necessarily, size isn't as important. I've stayed several other places in the city (and also considered returning to the Pan Pacific for this particular visit), but was interested in trying a Kimpton Hotel in the Union Square area for the first time.

Feedback and opinions are welcome.

I LOVE the Monaco. My favorite hotel in SF. Having said that, I've not stayed at the Prescott - and probably won't 'cause I love the Monaco so much. I've stayed at numerous other hotels in SF for busines, but always move over to the Monaco for the fun part of the trip. Love the lobby and activities. Love the goldfish you can have delivered to your room for company. Love the restaurant. Love the service and funky attitude. Although the rooms are smaller than say, the Hyatt, the attitude and approach are completely different. LoveItaly MAY be able to lure me away to try another one of her favorite SF hotels, but it's not really very likely.

Have a wonderful trip with your wife!

ThePhan,

Like starrsville (hi starrsville!) I have stayed at The Hotel Monaco but not the Prescott. And like starrsville (hi starrsville!) I love the Hotel Monaco, San Francisco.

Like the location, lobby, Corner Bar and Grand Cafe`. Yes, the rooms may be a little bit smaller than some, however, it's not like their Paris or New York small. Besides, once we made them an offer on a suite when they weren't booked and that was big and beautiful!

Good luck1

I stayed at the Prescott a few years ago. My room was so small I could barely move around. There were some other problems as well. However, I understand that if you reserve a room on the concierge floor, it's quite nice.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I had a couple of business associates today also suggest the Clift and Hotel Adagio. Checking rates, all four hotels are within $50 or so of each other. Would any of you smart and helpful people like to opine on either of those two?

I've stayed in a variety of SF hotels over the years, both on business and pleaseure, including the Clift, Sheraton Palace, Park Hyatt, Inn of the Four Sisiters and a couple at the top of Nob Hill. A couple years ago I stayed at The Monaco with my son. I loved it and every single thing about it. It's defintely where I would stay in the future (just haven't gone recently!)

I also favor the Hotel Monaco & the afore mentioned Clift. Another good option.

I have stayed at The Prescot a number of times, but always reserved a suite (not much more expensive than a room) and always on the concierge floor. One time when we were returning from a long Hong Kong flight, the concierge level receptionist took one look at us and insisted we NEEDED a large suite and she upgraded us -- that was VERY nice. The nicest part was continental breakfast in the lounge and evening wine and snacks -- that used to be Wolfgang Puck pizzas brought up from Postrio downstairs, but not sure that happens any more.
I must say the rooms were very small there, but having two small rooms, one as a bedroom and one as a living room made it very nice.

I loved The Prescott! I was there a few weeks ago. I got the hotel from Priceline for $78 plus tax and so I was THRILLED! Yes...The rooms are small but SO beautiful you won't mind the small size! They have a complimentary wine reception from 5-6 on the very nice lobby sitting area and FREE wi-fi in your room! It is less than a 5 min walk to Union Square so the location cannot be beat! Ask for room 601. My friends had this room and the room and bathroom were much larger than my room. You can not go wrong with this hotel unless you need a huge room.

I've recommended the Prescott and the Monaco to various visitors, for both vacation and business reasons. Neither is on the scale sizewise as the Clift or the Pan Pacific. They each have a nice restaurant on the street level. IF you can get a larger room at the Prescott for not too much more $$, do that. Otherwise, for a 24 hour stay, I think either will be just fine.
