Pre-Theater Dining

I am planning a trip for my husband and I for Jan. 8-14. We want to see a show while in town (considering I Love You, You're Perfect... and Phantom). Which would you recommend and is Tavern on the Green too far for Pre-theater dining on a Monday night?

Depends what you want--comedy or musical. Phantom is good, but always a bit overrated I think. I Love You, You're Perfect, is hysterically funny.
As for Tavern, it's not "Theatre District" dining, but if you eat early enough, you should be able to get a cab and get over there ok. There are certainly some good restaurants closer to the theatres--Tavern is more of a tourist place, but it's not a "great" restaurant, imo.

Thanks for the input. I saw a post about Luxia for pre-theater dining. Ever been there? We are going to be at The Belvedere, just down the street.

I Love You, You're Perfect, etc., is entertaining. Nothing great, but entertaining. If you choose that one, there's an excellent restaurant right next door--Le Madeleine.
Phantom, of course, needs no further explanation. It'll no doubt eventually pass Cats as the longest-running show in Broadway history.
Like many New Yorkers, I don't have a very high regard for Tavern on the Green. You certainly can do much, much better foodwise. The aforementioned Le Madeleine is just one of many excellent dining spots within walking distance of either show.

You will enjoy the Beleveder if you have not stayed there before. I personally loved "The Producers" and "AIDA"! My husband and I always eat at Pietrasanta on the corner of 9th and 47th (212.265.9471) when going to the theater. It is an amazing little Italian restaurant - truly great food and very resonably priced. The restaurant is walking distance from the Belvedere and most shows! Enjoy!

Here's another recommendation for LeMadeleine; ask to be seated in the garden room.

Okay, I think I am sold on Le Madeleine. Is 5:30 too early for reservations?

HowardR Dec 16th, 2003 09:59 AM

Anytime between 5:30 and 6 should be fine. And, as BuzzyJ says, ask for the garden room.

FOr good, moderately priced Italian, Cascina on 9th Av (and 45th I think, also 10% off if you show then your theater ticket). A good pre-theater dinner special with decent food, try Dervish, on 45th St.

Check out the discount theatre tickets I think Gypsy is marked down in the time period your interested in. Yes. I Love You, Your Perfect, Now Change is adorable... Tavern on the Green is too touristy..take the other suggestions.
