pre teen group visit to Tarrytown NY

I will be taking a small group of my piano students to upstate NY for masterclasses in June. For a reprieve from lessons we are visiting Sleepy Hollow Wednesday June 13. Any ideas/suggestions for food, touring etc. would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks!

"upstate NY" Sorry, but Tarrytown is NOT upstate NY! IT is in Westchester County, just north of New York City along the lower Hudson River.

While many disagree where exactly upstate starts, it sure isn't Tarrytown!

Why Tarrytown? While there is a lot to see in the Hudson Valley, there's not really that much for preteens. Perhaps a tour through the Phillipsburg Manor restoration will fill the bill. Exactly where "upstate" will you be?
You might check out these websites:
www.hudsonvalley.org
www.hvnet.com
(By the way, Tarrytown is not really "upstate," unless you consider anything north of New York City as upstate. It's less than 30 miles north of mid-Manhattan along the Hudson River.)

I live in TArrytown and I can assure you that it is not upstate. We can see the George Washington Bridge and part of the city sky line.

There is not all that much to do in Tarrytown and you sure don't want to eat in Sleepy Hollow if you do not speak Spanish.

Where are you going in Tarrytown? Do you have reservations yet.

Let me know more and I will try to help you

I feel DebitNM links to be very good, remember some of the rest. are either little places (fast food type), out of business or just plain junky.

Thank you for responses! I am staying in Wapp Falls-hence upstate but was looking for a day trip besides the usual we have done for the past 9 years. We will have a 15 pass. van.

Put the kids in the van and drive to the city. There are all kinds of choices -- museums, shows, shopping, sightseeing.

Dutchess COunty is rich in history too. I still don't consider that upstate either as we go there all the time to shop, LOL

When you say, "...the usual we have done," do you mean FDR's home and museum, the Vanderbilt Mansion, West Point and the many other sites within an hour's drive of Wappinger Falls?

This is our 9th year of camp. We have a day in the city-Ellis Island with the play booked in the am, Mary Poppins in the pm. This includes the lovely metro north train ride. We are also enjoying Roosevelt home-complete with secret service badge and Vanderbilt Mansion, 2 army concerts(1 at West Point & 1 on Vanderbilt grounds), Minnewaska, Lake Wilcox, shopping in Cold Springs, etc. etc. Just wanted to try something new
Still have an ear open for good ideas!

If you want to check out Sleepy Hollow from Dutchess County, may I suggest Hudson River Cruises: (www.hudsonrivercruises.com) I’ve never done it but it sounds interesting (and we'll probably try it this summer). And I just love the Hudson River; it's one of the main reason's why I still live in the area.

Here is a link of thing to do in Dutchess County:
http://www.dutchesstourism.com/thingstodo.asp. Just for fun, I personally love the Overlook Drive-In in Poughkeepsie and my boys still enjoy the Fun Central.

And of course the restaurants in Dutchess County: http://www.dutchesstourism.com/restaurants.asp. Not sure what type of food the kids would like but there is a Cracker Barrel on Rte 9 in Fishkill. I know not gourmet but it's tasty and they have a cute little shop attached.

Also, as DebitNM said, www.hudsonriver.com will give you some ideas (Bear Mountain State Park is like a second home to us).

Enjoy your time here and welcome to New York!

How about taking them shopping at Woodbury Common, one of the biggest and best outlet centers in the country? The shopping opportunities sure beat Cold Spring!

Hmmmm. What do pre-teens like to do in Wappingers Falls? You have a long list of items already. On a nice day there are outdoor things to do, but not a lot of must do or see activities nearby.

Fun Central on Rt 9 is good for about an hour or so - arcade games, etc. It's not cheap though - game tokens add up but it is a good bad weather day diversion and perfect for pre-teens.

It's too early in the season for Splash down - a mini mini water park, also on Rt. 9.

There's the Constitution marsh along the Hudson, just south of Cold Spring http://ny.audubon.org/cmac.htm. Hiking, nature trails - you probably sign up for ranger escorted group tour if you call them.

You can rent Kayaks, also in Cold Spring (Hudson River outfitters)

You don't mention the Morse home - not a lot there but it's another historic home.

Do they like art museums? There's the Dia Beacon art gallery. It's right at the Beacon Metro North stop, and easy to drive to from Wappingers Falls. www.diaart.org/bindex.html - nice modern art gallery - huge actually. Full of LARGE scale modern art.

As for food, what are you looking for, and what price range?

The Cracker Barrel is mentioned - good and basic. Across Rt 9 is a Chinese buffet & Ruby Tuesday. Numerous Italian ranging from excellent (& expensive) to bad to worse are all nearby.

Indian restaurant 5min off Rt 9 west on Rt 52. Good buffet lunch, but you have to like Indian food.

There's a newly opened place called Jackalope BBQ, again, Rt 9 right near Rt 52.

Some other dinner places on Rt 9 include Hudson's Ribs and Fish is a nicer/mid range place - probably not 5min from your hotel. www.hudsonsribsandfish.com

I can name more - give me $ and style.

also, nobody who lives in Wappingers Falls considers it upstate - the big prison in Fishkill is actually called "downstate correctional"

Thanks again. I know Dutchess County like the back of my hand. I grew up there and have returned for 9 years with my camp since moving. Just trying something south and Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown area is it! I need help/guidance with restaurants, historic attractions (besides another home to tour), gardens, hikes, etc. Tried the music hall but we happen to be there in between shows.

Further south than Tarrytown, but you could add these

Bronx Zoo and Botonical garden aren't too far from Tarrytown.

Yankee stadium Tour.

Okay, I also found this in hudsonriver.com:
Tarrytown Lighthouse, Palmer Avenue, Sleepy Hollow. A trip to this historic lighthouse begins at Kingsland Point Park. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the lighthouse offers nature and historic heritage programs on a monthly basis and features exhibits of logbooks and chronicles, photographs and furnishings that illustrate what life was like in a lighthouse more than 100 years ago. Guided tours for groups are available by reservation only. Admission to the lighthouse is free. Call for tour information or calendar of events, or watch the calendar listings for Historic River Towns. (914) 593-2650.

There is also this blurb on "The Sleepy Hollow Home Page"
Sites in Sleepy Hollow include:
The Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow (a national historic landmark)
The Old Dutch Burying Ground
Sleepy Hollow: Valley of Legends (Sleepy Hollow is actually the lower valley of the Pocantico River)
The Sleepy Hollow Bridge (aka The Headless Horseman Bridge)
Philipsburg Manor: a 18th century restoration
Patriot's Park: Capture Site of Major André—the British spy who conspired with Benedict Arnold
Ichabod's Flight: Backdrop to the legend
Kykuit: The Rockefeller Family Estate
Washington Irving's Grave at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery
The Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse—built in 1883
Captain Kidd's Rock
The John C. "the pathfinder" Fremont House
The Croton Aqueduct Trail
The Rockefeller State Park Preserve
...and much more...
Please keep in mind that, with the exception of Philipsburg and Kykuit, Sleepy Hollow is not set up as a touring destination. It’s just a small suburban village with a lot of history…. Some of these sites are not open to the public.

Sleepy Hollow is only 2 miles from the Tappan Zee Bridge, with commuter rail service only 40 minutes to mid-town Manhattan. The village, with its rich history and natural beauty, is entering a new era as more and more people discover the enchantment of Sleepy Hollow!
