pre teen group visit to Tarrytown NY
I will be taking a small group of my piano students to upstate NY for masterclasses in June. For a reprieve from lessons we are visiting Sleepy Hollow Wednesday June 13. Any ideas/suggestions for food, touring etc. would be GREATLY appreciated.

"upstate NY" Sorry, but Tarrytown is NOT upstate NY! IT is in Westchester County, just north of New York City along the lower Hudson River.
While many disagree where exactly upstate starts, it sure isn't Tarrytown!

Why Tarrytown? While there is a lot to see in the Hudson Valley, there's not really that much for preteens. Perhaps a tour through the Phillipsburg Manor restoration will fill the bill. Exactly where "upstate" will you be?

(By the way, Tarrytown is not really "upstate," unless you consider anything north of New York City as upstate. It's less than 30 miles north of mid-Manhattan along the Hudson River.)

I live in TArrytown and I can assure you that it is not upstate. We can see the George Washington Bridge and part of the city sky line.
There is not all that much to do in Tarrytown and you sure don't want to eat in Sleepy Hollow if you do not speak Spanish.
Where are you going in Tarrytown? Do you have reservations yet.

This is our 9th year of camp. We have a day in the city-Ellis Island with the play booked in the am, Mary Poppins in the pm. This includes the lovely metro north train ride. We are also enjoying Roosevelt home-complete with secret service badge and Vanderbilt Mansion, 2 army concerts(1 at West Point & 1 on Vanderbilt grounds), Minnewaska, Lake Wilcox, shopping in Cold Springs, etc. etc. Just wanted to try something new

If you want to check out Sleepy Hollow from Dutchess County, may I suggest Hudson River Cruises: (www.hudsonrivercruises.com) I’ve never done it but it sounds interesting (and we'll probably try it this summer). And I just love the Hudson River; it's one of the main reason's why I still live in the area.

Hmmmm. What do pre-teens like to do in Wappingers Falls? You have a long list of items already. On a nice day there are outdoor things to do, but not a lot of must do or see activities nearby.
Fun Central on Rt 9 is good for about an hour or so - arcade games, etc. It's not cheap though - game tokens add up but it is a good bad weather day diversion and perfect for pre-teens.
It's too early in the season for Splash down - a mini mini water park, also on Rt. 9.
There's the Constitution marsh along the Hudson, just south of Cold Spring http://ny.audubon.org/cmac.htm. Hiking, nature trails - you probably sign up for ranger escorted group tour if you call them.
You can rent Kayaks, also in Cold Spring (Hudson River outfitters)
You don't mention the Morse home - not a lot there but it's another historic home.
Do they like art museums? There's the Dia Beacon art gallery. It's right at the Beacon Metro North stop, and easy to drive to from Wappingers Falls. www.diaart.org/bindex.html - nice modern art gallery - huge actually. Full of LARGE scale modern art.
As for food, what are you looking for, and what price range?
The Cracker Barrel is mentioned - good and basic. Across Rt 9 is a Chinese buffet & Ruby Tuesday. Numerous Italian ranging from excellent (& expensive) to bad to worse are all nearby.
Indian restaurant 5min off Rt 9 west on Rt 52. Good buffet lunch, but you have to like Indian food.
There's a newly opened place called Jackalope BBQ, again, Rt 9 right near Rt 52.
Some other dinner places on Rt 9 include Hudson's Ribs and Fish is a nicer/mid range place - probably not 5min from your hotel. www.hudsonsribsandfish.com

Thanks again. I know Dutchess County like the back of my hand. I grew up there and have returned for 9 years with my camp since moving. Just trying something south and Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown area is it! I need help/guidance with restaurants,historic attractions (besides another home to tour), gardens, hikes, etc. Tried the music hall but we happen to be there in between shows.
