Power Walking in Charleston SC
 

My wife and I will be in Charleston next month for four days staying at the Charleston Place Hotel. Since I got hit by a car and broke my leg 10 years ago resulting in one leg slightly shorter than the other I can no longer jog but I'm in the habit of a 10K (about 6 mile) power walk every morning. Looking at a map of downtown Charleston I'm not sure what would be the best route with the least number of traffic lights and intersections since waiting at intersections means I have to stop or walk in circles which makes me look sorta stupid.

Jogging tracks are not an option because the main enjoyment is looking at the sights as I walk. So I'd really appreciate any routing suggestions. Thanks in advance.

You'll have to endure a few traffic lights on this route, sorry. But I think this would be good. Start out on the Meeting Street side of Charleston place and cross the street to walk down Market Street. Stay on the right side of the road until you reach East Bay then turn left (there's almost no traffic in the morning). Then take a left down Vendue range toward waterfront park. You'll be clear of stoplight now. You can walk all the way to the Battery from here, winding down a couple of residential streets. Avoid the cobblestone streets because of your leg (I can't even get my footing on those!).

Once you reach the battery, you can walk for a while without stops and you can walk by the beautiful homes in the area with very little traffic in the morning. So on this route, you'll be on the Harbor for a lot of the time, through the historic neighborhoods and the Battery. You can wind your way back through the residential streets to Charleston Place and re-enter the hotel on King Street. Have a great time!

Oops, when you reach East Bay, turn RIGHT.

Charleston Place is by far the best hotel I've ever stayed in. Everything is close by. Hop on with a rickshaw.
