Postcards for a teacher

Hi all,
Another school year is about to begin and I was trying to come up with something new for my bulletin board. I teach special ed.--lang. arts, reading and social studies--so I was thinking it would be very meaningful if I could hang postcards from the regions of the world that we learn about.

I have a dozen or so postcards but that's not enough. My 6th graders will learn about the following places:
Europe, including Russia
N. America
S. America
Oceania

I don't want bags of postcards coming to my school but would like a really a cool classroom.

Thanks in advance!
OWJ

I don't feel comfortable just posting my address on the web, so email me [email protected] and I will be happy to give you the snailmail address.

Thanks again!

I'm posting this on a couple of different bulletin boards in hopes that I'll get one or two postcards from each country we learn about.)

I messed up and omitted a space before typing my email address. Sorry!

OWJ, you've got mail. Fabulous idea, btw.

See...your email hasn't shown up...just wanted to let you know so you can resend.

hmmm... it just came back as "undeliverable" (I sent it again). I have to run out now, but I look at it more closely when I return.

OWJ: What a great idea! I'll email you.

One additional idea that my daughter loved when she was in elementary school was to receive postcards from relatives and family friends as they traveled during the year. It was also a wonderful way to include grandparents and other relatives who do not live near but can feel included in a school project. We just gave her address at school to these travelers and they would mail a postcard from their destination to her at school. These were then posted on a bulletin board for all to see. It was amazing and the students LOVED receiving mail!

DownSouth--That's a terrific idea! I think I'm going to steal it and make this postcard thing an on-going project throughout the year.

I've also decided I'm going to have kids write blogs using the computer instead of the old, tried and true journals in their notebooks. I think they'll like that more and enjoy feedback. Of course, this will be using a password protected site so as not to attract pedophiles and other maniacs!

Thanks again,
OWJ

One...: I would suggest, if you do not get the response you'd like, for you to email the chamber of commerce in specific areas you'd like to have some pics or postcards from...they are usually eager to send info/pics, special requests to promoter their areas!

That is PROMOTE their areas!

Belle.

OWJ - just a thought - when my daughter and son-in-law were teaching in Istanbul, they got a number of family members to be pen-pals to their students. Maybe somebody on the Europe or Asia boards would be willing to do that with your students - you'd have to screen carefully, of course, but there are regular posters there who might know somebody who would enjoy corresponding with kids in the US.

OSB and Meesthare--
Both excellent ideas :)

Thanks!

Heeheehee OWJ, I had you "wondering" instead of "wandering"! Too blurry eyed in the morning to type :D

Many times I'm wondering as I'm wandering so you were not off base, kiddo!

They had friends and relatives send postcards to my kids school as well. They also put a pin in a map to help the kids recognize where the postcards were from.

OWJ

hoping to visit Turks and Caicos this month.

Are you interested? or is this off your BB?

OneWanderingJew Jul 31st, 2005 06:17 PM

Alya,
We study the Caribbean as part of our Latin America unit so do send a postcard!

Thank you so much!
OWJ

Why not have the kids make postcards of the countries they are studying instead? The best teacher I ever had in elementary school started every year with a completely BLANK classroom. She felt the classroom (and the learning) belonged to her students, and we made it our room throughout the year. I'll never forget that! Just a thought.

OWJ: You've got mail again.

wliwl--I've actually done a create your own postcard project before and then modified it to a travel brochure.

Thanks for the suggestion.
