Post theater dinner reservations needed?

We will be going on a Soho Food/walking tour on Thurs from noon until 3. We have 8:00 theater tickets. I'm thinking we won't be hungry for dinner so soon after the walking tour so we may just go have something light after the show. We have several places in mind - Thalia, Vice Versa, Etcetera Etc, or Toloache. Do you think we would need reservations? Also, what is your opinion on these restaurants?

Thanks,
Laurie

I've eaten at the first three which are all good altho
I personally favor Etcetera.
You should be fine w/o reservations but I am always
chicken and make 'em anyway.

Thalia a looks like a diner to me.

ViceVersa is very popular and I think you would need a reservation there. They're all good restaurants. Thalia is not a diner nor do they serve diner food.. What show are you going to and what night of the week? Have you checked what time you'll be getting out?

You are correct, it is not a diner and it does not look like one. I would not, however, go there expecting great things. I am sure it can please for a late night snack.

Toloache is great Mexican food

Restaurants in the theater district can be surprisingly busy after the theater because a lot of people do as you have decided to do and go out for a bite to eat then. Some friends surprised me last weekend by 1) telling me that they went to Ruby Tuesday in Times Square and 2) telling me that they had to wait over an hour for a table at 10:30pm. So the short answer is, yes, make a reservation. But do so based on the time the show is expected to get out. All show running times are listed at Playbill.com.

We are going to see Fences. I checked Playbill (thanks for the suggestion) and see that it doesn't let out until 10:25. Looks like it's going to be a very late dinner. Especially if my daughter wants to wait at the stage door to see Denzel. So maybe it will be appetizers after the show.
Thanks,
Laurie

Bar Centrale on restaurant row (46th between 8th & 9th) is ideal for light after theater fare. It's up a flight of stairs above Joe Allen's (unmarked door) and feels a bit like a speakeasy. Make reservations! I'd book for ~ 11. http://www.barcentralenyc.com/youfoundus.html

If you'd rather go to one of the places you mention, Toloache makes sense for apps.

I called last night and got the last table at Bar Centrale (a cocktail table?) for Thursday at 11:00. Wow. Must be popular. Thanks for all your help!

I hope you like it!

We ate at Toloache twice on a recent trip to NY. Once we reserved in advance (thankfully, as the whole cast of Rock of Ages had taken over the first floor). The second night we walked in (our show was out quite early at 9PM) and were able to sit at the little five person bar area in front of the brick oven. Loved the food and margaritas here. Had a lovely chat with the owner. Its a very popular place with young Broadway casts. He told us that they often have entire casts, post show. The only down side is that the kitchen closes at 10PM. So you must be in the door before that.

One of our favorite late night places is still Joe Allen's. The food is great, the Cosmos are terrific and (I don't understand why) there are always celebrities at JA after shows. We've never failed to spot someone of interest - Kristen Chenoweth, Cyndi Lauper, Edward Norton, Matthew Brodrick. While we usually reserve, we have also been able to get a table as a walk-in for two.
