Fly to Tahoe?
I would think your arms would get tired around Bakersfield.
Ditto Reno. Beautiful drive over to So Tahoe. So Lake has an airport but I don't recall it being a commercial destination.
Or fly into Sacramento and drive up Hwy 50 for even prettier scenery.

We fly a couple times a year, LAX to Reno on American Air, operated by Horizon Air. Then rent a car and it's over the hill to Tahoe. It's a very easy terminal to navigate, can be out of there in minutes.
Tried Southwest last summer, but not worth the long lines outside at Terminal One LAX, long lines inside at Security and unreserved seats, more standing in line at Southwest gate. Price is about the same.

I flew into the South Lake Tahoe airport a number of times in the late 60's, on a commercial flight (prop plane, not jet), but I have no idea if such service still exists.
The Rino airport is, as noted, an easy drive (and a beautiful one, over the Mt. Rose highway) from Tahoe.

I am certain there is no longer any commercial flights to the Tahoe Airport. California use to have commercial flights at small airports (even at Buchanan Field in Concord) but those all stopped years ago unfortunatly. I read that the small Sonoma Airport will start having an airline (Horizon maybe?) offer flights sometime in 2007. That will be nice.

Hi LI !
Yes, Santa Rosa will have Horizon Air next year. They will fly to LA and
Seattle. They used to have United to LA
and it was soooo much easier than driving down to SFO, or even worse OAK.
We Sonoma folk are looking forward to it !

I just came from South Lake Tahoe, and per our tour guide who took us around the lake: there is NO airport to the lake.
You can fly to Reno, NV and take a shuttle bus to the South Tahoe casino area, or fly to Sacramento, get somehow (shuttle? Kal taxi?) to Amtrak train station, and a bus to South Tahoe.
Or rent a car and go to any area of the lake.
There may be ways to get to North Tahoe. Like Amtrak train from LA.
Oh, wait, you don't have to fly. You can take Amtrak from LA to Sacramento and the connecting bus to South Tahoe, it runs 3 times a day. We did that.

I would fly to Reno versus taking Amtrak, with all due respect dear Faina.
Razzle, I can imagine how excited you and everyone in your area must be about having Horizion starting service at the Sonoma Airport next year. I wish we had something like that at our Nut Tree Airport. What a joy that would be!!

Reno is the best bet for sure - but where on the Lake are you heading? Unless it is Inclne, the Mt Rose rd doesn't make sense. If Tahoe City or anywhere along the west side, you'd take I-80 to Truckee and Hwy89 to the lake. If to Stateline or anywhere on the south end, you'd take 395 south from the airport and Hwy 50 to the lake.
