Hi, I'm considering visiting here for 4 days in June, and was hoping for some input.

It seems nice - is it walkable and/or is there a local bus service? I'm not driving, so will need to get around on my own.

What are some things not to miss in Portsmouth? I did check online, but it's nice to hear personal recommends too. Thanks, Greg

Hi Greg, there's a downtown area people like to shop since Portsmouth has many unique shops and galleries. It begins in the dock area and extends to the downtown area. Just a few blocks. I always recommend a boat ride, either a harbor cruise or inland rivers. The dock is within walking distance of the parking garage for the downtown area. The Strawbery Banke historic area is across the street from the waterfront and Prescott Park that has lovely flowers. Check the distance from where you are staying to Strawbery Banke. It might be just a long walk. Years ago we took a carriage ride thru the historic area which was nice but I'm not sure they are still doing that. Most of what you want to see will be concentrated in the downtown area.

You would enjoy having breakfast or lunch at the Friendly Toast. The food is delish, and the decor is unique.

Definitely take a harbor tour by boat, and visit Strawberry Banke. You can spend a long time in Prescott Park sketching the boats or the flower gardens.

I'll second the recommendation for Friendly Toast and add a recommendation for the Flatbread Pizza Company - all organic menu (except the Coke). Best pizza around.

Also check out the schedule for the Music Hall - can be some interesting acts playing there. I've seen Natalie McMaster the famous Cape Bretton fiddler there.

capxxx: I didn't make it to Mystic - yet. Between school and family and life - well you know, lol. But I will definitely be ready for a break by early June. I'm getting ready to buy my Amtrak tickets in the next few days. Greg

I almost forgot - is 5 days, 4 nights a good length of time,or would I get bored after 4 days, 3 nights? Thanks, Greg

Well, I think Portsmouth is a little small to support even a 4 day trip -- you could be fine with 3 days. Maybe a side trip on the way home?

Portsmouth is a pleasant little city, but 4-5 days might be too much. You might want a day or two in Ogunquit or some other close by Maine seaside town.

For places to eat in Portsmouth, I'll echo those suggesting Friendly Toast for breakfast or Flatbread Pizza. Gilley's is a tiny, vintage lunch wagon diner dishing up hot dogs and hamburgers, good for a super cheap lunch. Pesce Blue (Italian seafood) and Black Trumpet (American) are excellent options for dinner.
