Portsmouth N. H restaurant
We have a friend that will visit us in(Boston) June. We'd like to show him Portsmouth. Any suggestions for an attractive restaurant with the best seafood?

The Dolphin Striker is very good, its a little bit more on the fine dining side without being too posh. It is right in downtown. Warren's Lobster house is casual and is technically in Kittery ME, but it is just over the bridge from Portsmouth and has a GREAT salad bar!You can find directions online. I have also heard really good things about The Green Monkey but I have yet to go there and I'm not really sure if it even has many seafood items on the menu. The Portsmouth Gas Light Co. is always a good stand by and had a little bit of everything on the menu. It also has a pretty good wine list and can make a mean watermelon martini.
Hope these suggestions help :) Have a great time! |
Thanks spacie, th lattim I was there the Striker wasn't open for lunch but I'm not crazy over salad bars, I''ll look for the Green Monkey and the Portsmouth Gas Light revies. Yes, you are helpful :) Thanks

The Dunaway Restaurant in Strawbery Banke is very good. http://www.dunawayrestaurant.com/
I also like Jumpin Jay's Fish Cafe, http://www.jumpinjays.com/ and Pesce Blue, http://www.pesceblue.com/ which are right across from each other on Congress St near Market Sq. Lindbergh's Crossing was an old favorite but has recently been reopened as the Black Trumpet Bistro. I've not eaten there but I've heard good reviews and it has an excellent location on Ceres St. http://www.blacktrumpetbistro.com/ I'd avoid Warren's. |
Thanks Wyatt92, I agree about reviews but they are a start:)

Pescu Blue seems to be the only one opened for lunch. That's the time we would drive to be there.

Sorry, didn't see that you wanted lunch.
Honestly, I'd go to the Ferry Landing. It's casual seafood, lobster rolls, chowder, fried seafood but with some nice specials. The best part is that it's literally on the water. It's where I always go for lunch on a nice summer day. There deck is covered so you can still eat outside even if the weather doesn't cooperate. |
Thanks Wyatt :)

I liked the Oar House when I was there, but I'm not sure that they are open for lunch.

The new Black Trumpet is excellent in every way.

We ate at Warren's Lobster House in October 06 and would so not recommend it. We went there for lobster/lobster rolls and were really looking forward to it. I had the lobster roll and it way lacked in flavor and was dry and rubbery. (What a disappointment!) The salad bar was huge - and - well, a salad bar. Not my favorite thing and we only made one trip. Service was lacking - and it was crowded. Wait-people were having arguments among themselves (loudly) & ignoring customers! It was our least favorite restaurant during our stay.

Are you looking for lunch or dinner, upscale or regular? Any other considerations (parking, water view)? Dunaway Restaurant (not on water) is very nice, and Oar House (possible water view from second floor) has never disappointed us. If you don't need to be in Portsmouth, we had a fabulous fish lunch at Wentworth By the Sea in Newcastle. It's an old inn restored beautifully by Marriott; worth a visit.

Brahmama - there are few things that annoy me more than when I'm in New England and I get sub-par lobster. That is half the reason I go there (well, there is that 'visiting family' thing as well I suppose ;).
