Beachbum--We used to go to the Farrell's at Washington Square when we visited grandparents on our birthdays. I always wonder what places like this will our kids look back on with great memories.

Scarlett, it's funny you mention the doggy daycare in Portland - we walked by it this past weekend and were commenting on it because we take our "kid" to doggy daycare twice a week here in Corvallis - they're becoming very popular.

Beachbum, as a kid we also would go to Farrell's ice-cream parlor - that is one of my favorite childhood memories (and being on the Ramblin Rod show - even though I wasn't a smile winner :(). We also went to the Organ Grinder a lot too - we went to the one that was on 82nd - is that the only one there was or were there more?

PamSF, you mean not all Whole Foods are like the one in the Pearl? Oh drat! That's the only one I've ever been too and assumed they would all be as good as that one, oh well, guess I'll take what I can get :)

Ed – I have never heard of a golf course being on the land before the mall at Lloyd Center. I looked the following information up:

In the 1920's Ralph Lloyd started buying up land on the east side of Portland and began to talk about his dream of building a fine hotel. By 1953 Lloyd owned 100 city blocks - a large enough tract to build his shopping center. On August 1, 1960, his shopping center opened. It was the largest of its kind in the world.

Beachbum – I can’t remember if the candy store was the same as the Carmel corn place that is still there – Joe Brown’s – it has the best Carmel corn!!

I also have great memories of Rambling Rod and Farrell’s. In fact, my husband and I have resurrected the “Portland Zoo” – we’ve nearly perfected the huge sundae, in a giant silver bowl with lots of whoops and hollers as we run it through the room on the “stretcher/holder” my Uncle built for it! We may have to welcome Scarlett to Portland with her own Portland Zoo!

Now that sounds good! Can go across and have beer at Henry's too. Love the drink trough there, lol!

Presocia, the skating rink is still there!

When I was there a year ago I saw a class of maybe 4-5 year olds trying to balance on the skates, like little penguins. This was so funny, I just sat down on a bench to watch them!

tracilee, The candy store I'm thinking of was on the opposite end of the bridge from the entrance to Meier & Frank. It had what was then considered pretty fancy stuff... and carmel apples.

I haven't been recently, but I think Joe Brown's might be gone. An aquaintance of mine owned it up until a year or two ago, when the Center's managers started hinting he would have difficulty renewing his lease. I guess it's not the type of tenant they're looking for anymore.

The Whole Foods in the Pearl is one of the newer large format stores for them. The main difference is the amount of extras like pizza, bakery, larger meat and seafood counter, extra self service bars and more in each department - plus the upstairs cafe/store.

Most Whole Foods we visit in other areas pale in comparison! - I guess they just built a new super sized concept store in Austin that they may take nationwide...

I know of 3 New Seasons: on NE 33rd & killingsworth, on about SE 25th and Division, and one in Sellwoood close to the Bridge. there are several nice Whole foods as well, I just find New Seasons a bit nicer and friendlier. Also locally (Portland) owned.

Doggie Day care! Portland is such a dog town. I love getting window seats in restaurants cuz there is always a dog "parked" out on the sidewalk!

I was reading another web site where they were discussing all the Portland restaurants that allow dogs- in ouside or deck seating of course!

I think you might be confusing Whole Foods with another store, Icuy. The Pearl location is the only one in Portland. New Seasons also has stores in Raleigh Hills and Hillsboro. I like the idean of local ownership too, but once you've been to Whole Foods....

I asked my wife this morning if she couldn't go to the more conveniently located New Seasons to pick up something for Father's Day plans. There was no hesitation in her response; it had to be Whole Foods.

Just to add to the doggy day care topic...Doggy day cares are all over the Portland area! Tualatin, West Linn, Beaverton, various Portland locations...and even Vancouver (where I live) has two!

And let me just say - it is the best thing since...Whole Foods? ;)

People think we send our dog there to spoil her but really it is for our own sanity!

Aside from the Portland weather forecasts that I get from the Yankee each day ( he is becoming obsessive over how much rain there is LOL) I hear nothing but positive and good things about Portland.
We fell in love with it on our trip last Sept but this is such a great thread to confirm our feelings about how much fun it is gonna be living there!
I found an apt online, I just have to do some haggling, I don't want to pay the $800K they want :D
Doggie Day Care will be so great for us in the beginning since we have no one to watch over him, and I fear big barking binges if we leave him in a strange place right away..((&))..he will be so confused.
Can dogs go on any public transportation? Max? Streetcar?

Rumors going around my town that a new Whole Foods is set to break ground about a mile from my house. \:D/

With Trader Joe's about 2 miles away and WF about 1, why vacation? :-P

Do you have a big or small dog? Lately I've been seeing people with little tiny dogs just about everywhere in peoples purses/doggy bags...probably can even sneak them on max. Though I'm thinking 'no' on the public transportation (unless they are seeing eye dogs or something!), but I don't know that for a fact.

I do hope you get a place in the Pearl - thats where I live in my fantasy life! haha. Luckily it's a pretty short 20 minute drive from Vancouver so I can get my fix! :)

Also there is a book called "A Bark in the Park" that talks about all the dog friendly walks/hikes/parks to take your dog in and around Portland. It describes them quite well - including doggy swimming opportunites at each place.

We almost bought into one of first major loft conversions in the Pearl. Price for a large space (and private parking) was $150k and another $35k to finish it up inside. Ultimately, we decided to give it a miss...bad decision!

Beachbum--Yes, as we sit in our driveways huddled in shorts, fleece jackets, and blankets watching the fireworks...wishing for summer, lol! We used to come down here from Seattle for the 4th because at least it is usually dry here.

BTilke--OMG I can imagine how much you have kicked yourself for that! You should have bought several at those prices.

My newly remodled Whole Foods has everything but that cafeteria-they do have an indoor/outdot dining area for goodies from the deli though.

My FodorFriend elaine, sent me a Bark in the Park a gift, or she sent it to Pup, but he still has trouble reading the big words..I am amazed at how pup friendly Portland is!

You're right beachbum...I was thinking that Zupans was a Whole Foods. I do like the Whole foods on Couch too.. my mom in law lives nearby on NW Davis and has switched from Fred Meyer to WF.

I just like New Seasons Markets even better!

You Portland Guys got it soooo good- even your Safeway is better than ours! And no sales tax...

As an investment, it would have been great, but as a home to live in, not so much. There was no yard for OUR pup and when you live in one of those open space, high ceiling lofts, where on earth do you go to escape a loudly snoring husband? ;-)

BTilke, that is definitely something to think about!
Pup is going to have a big shock, he has gotten so used to running free in his big yard, but he is so social, I think, like me, he will love being in the city again with lots of people and other pups.

We are getting estimates from movers..we might have to LIVE at the 5th Avenue Suites for 7 - 15 days waiting for the delivery of our house LOL
What a shame, Pup and the Yankee & I will suffer through the trauma of living in a 4* hotel for a couple of weeks :D ((&))
